Sledge Bros. (also called Sledge Brothers, Elite Hammer Bros., or Heavy Hammer Bros., and sometimes mistaken for Sumo Bros.) are large overweight variants of Hammer Bros. that throw sledge hammers instead of regular ones. They also have a ground pound attack capable of stunning whoever is on the ground by the time they land. Sledge Bros. were originally depicted as literal larger variations of the Hammer Bros. found in Giant Land, but have since been repurposed as elite variations of the Hammer Bros.

In the Super Mario series[]

Super Mario Bros. 3[]

Sledge Bro

Sledge Bros. make their debut in Super Mario Bros. 3, in this game, they are commonly seen in Giant Land and also replace the Hammer Bros. on the World Map in this World. Sledge Bros. are the larger counterparts to the Hammer Bros. (as the Grand Goombas, Gargantua Koopa Troopas, Piranhacus Giganticus, and Colossal Koopa Paratroopas are to the Goombas, Koopa Troopas, Piranha Plants, and Paratroopas respectively). Sledge Bros. however are upgraded as they can not only toss larger sledgehammers but their hammers are also tossed at a greater distance. Upon landing from a jump, a Sledge Bro shakes the ground, causing Mario or Luigi to become briefly stunned if they are on the ground. Since they're so large and throw hammers much farther than normal, Mario or Luigi can stand next to them and not be harmed. Just remember to be in the air by the time a Sledge Brother lands or else you'll be paralyzed. They can also break any blocks that are under them. Despite being much larger, a Sledge Bro is no more durable than a regular Hammer Bro and can be defeated with stomps or the effects of a Fire Flower, Super Leaf, Tanooki Suit, Hammer Suit, or a Starman. Defeating a Sledge Bro earns the player 1,000 points.

Super Mario World[]

Although Sledge Bros. are absent in Super Mario World, two similar species called Sumo Bros. and Amazing Flyin' Hammer Brothers appear, the former stomps the ground similar to the Sledge Bros. creating electric shockwaves while the latter behaves similarly to a Sledge Bro by tossing sledgehammers from a flying platform. Sledge Bros themselves were planned to make an appearance in the game at one stage as well.

New Super Mario Bros.[]

Sledge Bros. make a return in New Super Mario Bros. behaving as they did previously, they once again attack by tossing sledgehammers and preforming nasty ground pounds that can stun Mario/Luigi if he's standing on the ground. Their ground pounds can also break the blocks below them, this tactic can be used to obtain one of the Star Coins. Sledge Bros. can be defeated with stomps or the effects of a Fire Flower, Blue Shell, Mega Mushroom, or Starman. Sledge Bros. are rather rare enemies with only two appearing in the whole game, they are only seen in World 8-7.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[]

Sledge Bros. appear again in New Super Mario Bros. Wii retaining their behavior from before, they once again throw their sledgehammers and preform their nasty ground-shaking ground pounds. The Sledge Bros. can also toss their sledgehammers at any given range as well, a Sledge Bro can be defeated with either stomps or the effects of a Fire Flower or Starman. Despite their size, they can still be frozen with the effects of an Ice Flower or Penguin Suit however, the ice block cannot be picked up but it can still be ground pounded to be destroyed. They can be found in World 6-2 and World 7-Castle.

New Super Mario Bros. 2[]

They can still be defeated with stomps or the effects of a Fire Flower, Gold Flower, Super Leaf, Mega Mushroom, Starman, or an Invincibility Leaf. In the base game, Sledge Bros. are incredibly rare enemies with only one appearing in the whole game, in World 2-2. In the DLC Packs Coin Pack Challenge A and Mystery Adventures Pack, Sledge Bros. are more common however, Sledge Bros. appear to be unaffected by the Gold Rings but they still give Coins upon defeat.

A Sledge Bro

Sledge Bros. make an appearance in Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition. However, they are only really seen as a boss in a couple levels. Sledge Bros. are Dark attribute characters, and their skill possesses heaps of black magic as it changes all Light Orbs into Dark Orbs, while their Awoken Skill increases the amount of HP that gets restored whenever Heart Orbs are cleared.

When fought as enemies, a Sledge Bro will often start a battle by using Dark Protection to defend itself against Dark attribute attacks. It also takes longer to attack than the other members of the Hammer Brother species, attacking every 3 turns.

A Sledge Bro can be made by giving five Super Mushrooms to a Hammer Bro.

In the Paper Mario series[]

Paper Mario: Color Splash[]

Paper Bros

A Sledge Bro teamed up with two Boomerang Bros.

Sledge Bros. make their Paper Mario series debut in Paper Mario: Color Splash, where they can be found in the Green Energy Plant and Black Bowser's Castle. They usually join in on battles with various other Bros. and burst in with a earth-shaking ground pound to make their entrance. Sledge Bros. themselves are very tough customers as they have high amounts of both HP and Defense (Toughness). In battle, they attack by tossing their powerful sledgehammers and preforming ground pounds.

There is also a mini-boss called Shady Sledge Bro, who is a Sledge Bro with sunglasses and the leader of a gang consisting of a Koopa Troopa, a Shy Guy, and a Spike. In the Dark Bloo Inn, he wanted to ride on "it" before Mario defeated him and took "it" back.

In Dr. Mario World[]

Sledge Bros. appear in Dr. Mario World as Assistants to the main doctors. Their stage mode effect grants a chance the skill meter is fully filled at the start of a stage, where the chance is greater at higher levels, up to 20% at the maximum level. Their versus mode effect is to grant a chance that the attack meter will fill extra if a virus is eliminated. Contrary to the game's description which indicated that it can occur repeatedly, it only activates at the start of the match and the effect will last throughout the match if it does, and has a higher chance to do so at higher levels. When this effect activates, any elimination made either through a capsule match, elimination through skill, or elimination through other objects like shells will fill the attack meter by an extra point for each elimination made. Contrary to the game's description, viruses are not required to be eliminated to gain extra attack points. This effect stacks with Monty Mole's effect, meaning that if both activate, two points will be filled in the attack meter for every elimination made.

Trivia[]

  • The Sledge Bros. ground pounding abilities are also shared with Roy Koopa and Morton Koopa Jr., both Koopalings also possess nasty ground pounds which can shake the ground and stun those standing on the ground. It could be possible that one (or both) of these Koopalings rules over the Sledge Bros.
