Side somersault[1] (横宙返り Yoko chūgaeri?, Side Somersault) is a high jump in the Super Mario series. It made its first appearance in Super Mario 64.

Side somersault is a high jump that debuted in Super Mario 64. The method benefits the player that cannot reach places with a normal jump. In Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2, the player can perform a side jump by pressing A Button as they make a U-turn.[1]

In Super Mario 64[]

Mario can perform a side somersault according to the Super Mario 64 instruction booklet.

In Super Mario Sunshine[]

Mario can perform a side somersault in Sunshine. In this case, the player must immediately tilt the Control Stick to a direction. Afterwards, the player must simultaneously tilt the Control Stick to the opposite direction and press A Button.[2]

In Super Mario Galaxy[]

Mario can perform the side somersault in Galaxy. The player must use the Nunchuk Control Stick and the A Button like the latter method to perform the technique.

In Super Mario Galaxy 2[]

Mario can perform the side somersault in Galaxy 2 by using the same method in Galaxy and Sunshine.
