The Shy Guy Airtub is a vehicle from the Mario & Luigi franchise. They first appeared in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, but can be first battled as regular enemies in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team.
Description[]
In their debut appearance, Shy Guy Airtubs appeared as a small airships piloted by Shy Guys with a single cannon on their front. Dream Team redesigns them to be slightly bigger and adds cannons on the side, with three Shy Guys apiece. This design returns in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam. Mario & Luigi: Brothership gives them two Shy Guys.
Combat[]
Since Shy Guy Airtubs are considered to be background enemies, they do not appear on the field. They may randomly appear in a fight located in the Ultibed parts' areas.
Shy Guy Airtubs have two attacks, with their first attack being their main attack which is done on their turn and involves them opening fire with their side cannons. Mario and Luigi must use their hammers to repel these Cannonballs. If they are destroyed by these cannonballs (or a Taunt Ball), the Shy Guy Airtubs crash into the ground in the background, and their Shy Guy passengers ditch the wreckage and join the fight.
Shy Guy Airtubs only use their second attack when the Bros. use a Taunt Ball to call them over. Here, the Airtubs fire cannonballs from their main cannons, one at each Bro. Before the attack, the Airtubs' Shy Guy pilots point at the Bros. The Bro. who gets pointed at by the most Shy Guys will be the first target. The cannonballs can be deflected with hammer strikes, but their spikes and size increase the damage taken from a botched counterattack; conversely, the Shy Guy Airtubs take more damage from getting hit by their own deflected cannonballs in this attack. If the Shy Guy Airtubs are defeated by blocking this move, they crash in the foreground, dealing damage to all other enemies that were in the foreground of the battle.
Statistics[]
Shy Guy Airtubs are of Level 27. They have 123 hit points at full health, an attack power of 245, a defense of 83, and a speed of 110. Their destruction yields 250 experience (300 with the Quick Level Rank-Up Bonus), 240 coins, an Ultra Candy in 4 out of 5 item drops, and a Deluxe Iron Ball Hammer in 1 out of 5 item drops.
Other Appearances[]
Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam features some Shy Guy Airtubs bringing Toadette's Papercrafts, which are destroyed by Papercraft Bowser, though she gets her revenge by creating Papercraft Fire Mario using Fire Ore. Mario & Luigi: Brothership also features the Shy Guy Airtub.
Variations[]
Shy Guy Airtubs have two variations that can be found later in the game.
Shy Guy Airtub R's are only seen throughout Kamek's third maze and the third map in Neo Bowser Castle. They have the same attacks as their weaker counterpart, but their colour is changed to purple, and their stats and those of their own Shy Guy pilots (who themselves are yellow) are stronger, with a Level of 35, 178 hit points, an attack power of 364, a defense of 119, a speed of 144, an experience drop of 500 (600 with Quick Level), and a loot drop with 160 coins, a Star Candy in 1 out of 5 drops, and a Deluxe Soft Hammer in 1 out of 20 drops.
During the final battle, Dreamy Bowser can summon Shy Guy Airtub Deluxes (Shy Guy Airtub DX for short). Shy Guy Airtub Deluxes look different from their weaker cousins, having a jet black paint job, and their front cannon is stylised to resemble Bowser's head. When it appears, the Shy Guy Airtub Deluxe will chase Luigi who must dodge the fireballs launched from its front cannon. Mario (who gets furious at Dreamy Bowser during this attack) must attack the Airtub withh his hammer. Shy Guy Airtub Deluxes have the same background side cannon attack as the weaker versions. The Shy Guy Airtub Deluxe is Level 36 with 240 as the hit point maximum, an attack power of 449, a defense, a defense of 288, a speed of 145, and no experience or loot drops.
