A Shrinking Tile is a type of platform from the Super Mario Galaxy games. They are found in several galaxies. Shrinking Tiles first appear in Super Mario Galaxy.

Description[]

Shrinking Tiles are green tiles that have checkerboard patterns and metallic frames, with four or six squares on each side.

In Super Mario Galaxy / Super Mario Galaxy 2[]

As their name implies, Shrinking Tiles shrink and lose their structural integrity when Mario steps on them. Eventually, the tile will shrink so much that it is effectively destroyed, leaving behind only its frame.

Despite their metallic appearance, the frames cannot be touched. Their only purpose is to mark the Shrinking Tile's location.

Shrinking Tiles appear in the following levels in the first game:

  • Good Egg Galaxy: Shrinking Tiles make their debut in the mission "Dino Piranha," where a single one bridges the gap between the main continent of the Bitten Apple Planet to a floating island with a Warp Pipe blocked by a Piranha Plant. This Warp Pipe leads to a planet that is infested with Flipswitch Panels and serves as an alternate path towards the Block Climb Planet in case the Spiky Piranha Plant mid-boss cannot be defeated.
  • Hurry-Scurry Galaxy: Shrinking Tiles have their role expanded for this galaxy, where they comprise every planet with the exception of the Starting Planet's landing spot and the area just before the Launch Star that leads to the Shrinking Satellite.
  • Beach Bowl Galaxy: When Mario walks around the Cyclone Stone's second head, Shrinking Tiles can be found bridging some gaps.
  • Sea Slide Galaxy: A second Shrinking Satellite will be created when Mario feeds a Hungry Luma near the Cannon 40 Star Bits.
  • Toy Time Galaxy: The 8-Bit Mario Planet has shrinking tiles forming the boots, eyes, and hair.

In the second game, they can be found in the following locations:

  • Haunty Halls Galaxy: Close to the end of the mission Sneaking Down the Creepy Corridor, Shrinking Tiles can be found forming the final few platforms in the mission.
  • Mario Squared Galaxy: Same as the 8-bit Mario Planet from the Toy Time Galaxy from the first game.
  • Stone Cyclone Galaxy: As in the Beach Bowl Galaxy from the first game, some of the platforms on the Cyclone Stone have Shrinking Tiles.
  • Grandmaster Galaxy: On the Flip-swap Platforms Planet, Mario can find Shrinking Tiles, although he can use the Cloud Flower to avoid stepping on them.

In Mario Tennis Open[]

Shrinking Tiles appear in the special game Galaxy Rally, comprising both sides of the court. In this game, their checkerboard pattern has been altered, and they each bear four squares (two on each side). This is the only game so far where Shrinking Tiles can regenerate, and every time the ball bounces on them, they vanish, and the previous one regenerates.
