The Shield, sometimes named Barrier, is an item from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise and a recurring item in the Mario & Sonic series. Its first Mario-related appearance is in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games for Nintendo DS.

Description[]

The Shield is a defensive power-up item that, when used, forms a protective green or blue bubble around the user, shielding them permanently a single incoming item or attack before disappearing.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (Nintendo DS)[]

The Shield is an item in Dream Race and Dream Long Jump. In Dream Race, aside from the Shield's usual effects, it protects its user from the wind.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (Wii)[]

Here, they are named Barriers and appear as an item in most of the Dream Events except Dream Ski Jumping (Team), Dream Figure Skating, Dream Ice Hockey, Dream Curling and Dream Snowball Fight.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (Nintendo DS)[]

Like in the Wii version, they are named Barriers. They appear as an item in Ski Cross Racing, Rocket Ski Jumping, Ski Shooting and Extreme Snowboarding, all in which they. In Supersonic Downhill, Barriers are instead collected throughout the course and take effect immediately upon contact to protect the player from Brick Blocks.

The Shield is one of the items in Dream Fencing, where they retain their usual function, and are obtained from an Item Box at random.

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (Nintendo 3DS)[]

Shields appear in Football Plus, where it blocks the goal for a period of time after the item meter has been fully charged.

Shields appear in Duel Beach Volleyball, where they protect the user from one attack.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020[]

Shields appear in the Dream Racing event. Here, the Shield is identified with an icon that depicts a light bubble, just like in Sonic Runners. They can be obtained randomly from modern Item Boxes during this event. Once obtained, the player has to manually engage the Shield for it to take effect. In addition, the Shield only stays equipped to the user for about ten seconds. When obtaining this Shield in gameplay, the playable character gets surrounded by a translucent blue-green bubble.

Shields appear in the Bullet Train Blast minigame, in which their sprite is reused from the original Sonic the Hedgehog. Unlike in Dream Racing, a Shield is automatically activated upon being obtained and lasts until they block an instance of damage. When obtaining this Shield in gameplay, the playable character gets surrounded by a washed-out blue bubble. Its animation also shows it flashing constantly.
