Sandmaarghs are a desert-inhabiting variant of Magmaarghs. They first appear in Super Mario 3D Land and return in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam and Mario Golf: Super Rush.

Behavior[]
In Super Mario 3D Land, a Sandmaargh follows Mario or Luigi while hiding under the sand, and when it gets close enough, the Sandmaargh pops out and tries to chomp him. If the Sandmaargh is unsuccessful, Mario or Luigi have a chance to attack it while the Sandmaargh is above ground by either jumping onto it or by swinging their tail at it while in Tanooki form.
In Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, during combat, the Sandmaargh attacks by inhaling. It can briefly eat one of the Mario Bros. if he is drawn into the Sandmaargh's mouth.
In Super Mario 3D Land[]

Sandmaarghs appear in a few desert-themed levels. They are first encountered in World 3-1 and make a reappearance in World 5-1 and Special 6-1. While underground, a Sandmaargh's shadows can be seen above ground, revealing where they are hiding and their movements.
In Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam[]
Sandmaarghs are enemies encountered in Doop Doop Dunes. Like a few other enemies, they have no paper counterparts. When a Sandmaargh attacks, the targeted brother has to use his hammer to knock away the obstacles into Sandmaargh's mouth, as being hit by an obstacle pushes him into the Sandmaargh's mouth. If a bro gets eaten by a Sandmaargh in the overworld, the battle starts with it eating the bro, dealing a lot of damage to him.
Sandmaarghs also appear in the Paper Toad Tailgate and Paper Toad Trail Trials missions, in which the Mario Bros. must jump at the right time before they come out of the sand while rescuing the Paper Toads, otherwise the Sandmaargh eats one of them.
In Mario Golf: Super Rush[]

Large Sandmaarghs are encountered in Balmy Dunes. If a ball hits a Sandmaargh, this results in a stroke penalty.
