Rupees are a recurring item in the The Legend of Zelda series. They have made a few appearances in Mario-related media, such as being the replacement for coins in Hyrule Circuit in both Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
Rupees are green and resemble a sexagonal gemstone. Originally, Rupees varied in their value, which can be told by their colour, but the Mario Kart 8 version is always green and is worth a single coin.
The name Rupee comes from "ruby."
