Rotating Blocks, also known as Spinning Blocks, are yellow blocks that first appear in Super Mario World. When a Rotating Block is hit from below or the sides, it spins, allowing Mario to pass through it.

In Super Mario series[]

Super Mario World[]

Rotating Block SMW sprite

Rotating Blocks are somewhat of a replacement for Brick Blocks from previous Super Mario games. Normal Rotating Blocks can spin for a short amount of time when hit from below or attacked with a Cape Feather. However, some Rotating Blocks act like ? Blocks and contain a power-up. Mario or Luigi can break a Rotating Block by Spin Jumping on it while in their Super form, and breaking a Rotating Block is worth 50 points. Chargin' Chucks can also break through Rotating Blocks. Some enemies, such as Koopa Troopas and Galoombas, hide in Rotating Blocks and come out when the player gets near the Rotating Blocks they are hiding in.

Super Mario Maker/Super Mario Maker 2[]

Rotating Blocks reappear in Super Mario Maker and Super Mario Maker 2. Rotating Blocks can be found in the Super Mario World mode, in which they replace Brick Blocks from other modes. Rotating Blocks function the same as in Super Mario World.
