Rosalina

Bowser kidnaps Princess Peach by removing her castle from the ground with Peach still inside, and he also attacks the Comet Observatory and steals all of its Power Stars, which serve as its power source. Rosalina asks Mario to retrieve the lost Power Stars, and she promises to help him save Princess Peach in return. Once Mario retrieves enough Power Stars, Rosalina is able to turn her Comet Observatory into a comet and drive Mario to the center of the universe, where Bowser keeps the kidnapped Princess Peach.

Rosalina also appears in the Library of the Comet Observatory, where she tells a backstory of herself that is unlocked gradually as the game progresses. In the story, Rosalina was a girl who traveled in a spaceship to help a lost Luma find its parents, hiding the fact that she herself had lost her own mother. As Rosalina starts to feel lonely, numerous other Lumas soon come to join her, and she learns that their purpose in life to eventually transform into other things. Rosalina decides to build a house for her new family, leading to the creation of the Comet Observatory.

After Bowser is defeated by Mario at Bowser's Galaxy Reactor, the location collapses into a supermassive Black Hole and devours everything in its path. All of Rosalina's Lumas sacrifice themselves by going into the black hole in order to stop it. Following this is a scene where Rosalina appears to Mario, explaining to him about the circle of life and the death and rebirth of stars; it is implicit in her explanation that the universe and all the Lumas are to be reborn. Afterwards, she is gone and Mario, as well as Bowser and Peach, wake up back in the Mushroom Kingdom again.

When all 120 Power Stars have been collected, Rosalina delivers a thank you message to the player, promising to watch over them from beyond the stars.

Super Mario Galaxy 2[]

Rosalina plays a more minor role than in Super Mario Galaxy. The game introduces the Cosmic Spirit, a shadowy counterpart of Rosalina who offers Mario or Luigi to complete a level on their behalf if they have lost several lives there.

Rosalina is the one who mysteriously sends letters containing 50 Star Bits to Baby Luma, but she does not reveal her identity in them. Rosalina makes a physical appearance herself after Mario defeats Bowser and rescues Princess Peach in the final cutscene before the credits play. Once all 120 Power Stars have been collected, Rosalina makes another appearance to tell the Lumas the story of the Green Power Stars, which unlocks the missions with them. Finally, once the game has been completed entirely, Rosalina appears on Starship Mario, where she thanks Mario.

Rosalina appears during the ending sequence, after the player collects 120 Power Stars, where it is revealed that Rosalina was reading the story of the events to some Lumas.

She frequently sends letters to the Baby Luma who accompanied with Mario, but she does not reveal her identity. This game also features a cosmic version of Rosalina, known as the Cosmic Spirit.

Super Mario 3D World/ Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[]

Rosalina is the fifth playable character and the only one of them who has to be unlocked first. She can be unlocked by clearing the level Super Galaxy. The original Wii U version is Rosalina's first playable appearance in the Super Mario platforming series.

Rosalina is the only character who can use a Star Spin, which Mario and Luigi can use in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. Like Mario and Luigi, Rosalina can use the Spin as both an attack and a second jump. Rosalina has regular traction, jumps high in general, although she is tied with Princess Peach in that she moves slower than the other characters.

Super Mario Maker[]

Rosalina appears as an unlockable Mystery Mushroom transformation by clearing the 100 Mario Challenge on normal difficulty setting or higher or by scanning a Rosalina & Luma amiibo. Here, she is given an 8-bit appearance based on her appearance from Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, with a Luma floating alongside her.

Super Mario Odyssey[]

Rosalina makes a cameo as an 8-bit sprite that can be found on a vegetable on the Dark Side of the Moon and a wall on the Darker Side of the Moon.

Aside from this, while Rosalina does not appear herself, concept art shows that she would have appeared as a street musician playing an acoustic guitar.

This is the first playable appearance of Rosalina, although she first has to be unlocked by either attaining at least a 1 Star Rank for all Mirror Grand Prix Cups, playing fifty races while also having a save file for Super Mario Galaxy, or by playing in 4,950 races if the player does not have the save file. Unlike Princess Peach and Princess Daisy, who are in the middleweight class, Rosalina is in the heavyweight class, likely because she is taller. Rosalina's signature kart is the Honeycoupe, and her signature bike is Shooting Star. Rosalina has the Grand Star as her emblem.

While Rosalina is racing, a yellow Luma circles around her the entire time, and makes sounds such as a giggle when she performs a trick in midair. When driving in a kart, Rosalina wears her regular outfit, but while riding a bike, Rosalina wears a biker suit like Peach's and Daisy's, but her biker outfit has a color matching that of her dress. Rosalina is also the Staff Ghost character played as in Rainbow Road.

Rosalina was given another course bearing her name, Rosalina's Ice World. In races, Rosalina's rivals are Princess Peach and Honey Queen, while her third rival is Toad.

Rosalina also has a fade, meaning that her ball curves to the right. Rosalina can shoot at a height up to 7.75, higher than the other characters, and at this height, Rosalina can easily hit over trees, although the golf ball is still more affected by the wind speed. Unlike the other characters, Rosalina does not hold her club but rather levitates it and controls it with her wand.

Rosalina is the only one of the three newcomers who are available from the start. To differentiate her from the other characters, Rosalina levitates while moving around, with small dust of sparkles coming from her feet, and even sometimes her racket. Additionally, she levitates the ball instead of holding it.

Rosalina is a Power-type character, meaning that her hits are fast and strong, and is the first female character in the Mario sports games to have this type.

Crossover appearances[]

Super Smash Bros. series[]

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U[]

Rosalina & Luma are newcomers in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. She is the fifth Mario universe representative and the second female representative after Peach. In battle, Luma mimics the actions of Rosalina, allowing the duo to attack from two places at once. Rosalina's Special Moves and standard move set are all based on Super Mario Galaxy:

  • Luma Shot: Rosalina launches Luma forward, allowing it to remain in one location to set up combos
  • Star Bits: Rosalina commands Luma to fire two miniature Star Bits.
  • Launch Star: Rosalina propels herself forward with a Launch Star.
  • Gravitational Pull: Rosalina creates a gravity field around her, drawing all items and projectiles (with nullified effects) toward her.

Rosalina's Final Smash Power Star involves her summoning a massive Power Star, which gradually expands while shooting out smaller stars before exploding, causing massive amounts of damage for opponents caught within it.

Much like Peach, her defense and speed equipment attributes are based on her normal outfit (in which her dress has glimmering stars).

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]
