Rogueport Underground, originally called Rogueport Sewers, is a location in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and it's remake.
History[]
One thousand years before the events of the game, it was the location of a civilization. Long after its decline, people built Rogueport over top of it. Two notable locations found within these halls are the Thousand-Year Door and the Pit of 100 Trials. There is also a small town down there and a shop, named Deep Down Depot, that sells Gold Bars. This shows that people have actually started successful businesses down here. Mario, with the help of Goombella and Professor Frankly, go through here at the very beginning of his journey. Throughout his time there, he finds a Black Chest that houses some sort of demon. This demon then "curses" Mario to be doomed to turn into an paper airplane when you press "Y" on the airplane spaces.
Points of Interest[]
Underground City[]
As stated above, one of the main attractions of Rogueport Underground is that most of the first floor composes of an underground city that people do live in. According to Goombella, most of the people living underground prefer it over to Rogueport itself. Many also decided to set up their shops or open their own side business, such as one of the denizens named Wonky, a man who makes a living by selling his information. The underground city is also home to numerous of Shamans who are able to aid Mario in a variety of ways. A character by the name of Dazzle is one that trades valuable badges for Star Pieces and can be found just outside Merluvlee's house. Rip Cheato, a character that appeared in the previous game, also found his home here deciding to offer a unique service where he powers up one of Mario's partners in exchange for another being powered down. This is most likely done due to the limited amount of Shine Sprites that can be found in the game as some partners won't be able to be fully ranked out.
Underside of East Rogueport[]
The underside of east Rogueport can be accessed right from the beginning after Professor Frankly unlocks the gate leading to the warp pipe. Until after Chapter 3, this warp pipe is the only method to access Rougeport Underground itself (as the west side is blocked by an upset Zess T. until Mario can purchase the Contact Lens for her). Aside from the aforementioned Rip Cheato who lives in the first area (which cannot be accessed until after completing Chapter 5 after recruiting Admiral Bobbery), there isn't much other notable areas to east Rogueport. Heading further east above the gap (which requires the Plane transformation) leads to an are filled with water and a large Blooper can be fought. Defeating the Blooper causes platforms to appear allowing Mario to jump over them and reach a warp pipe that leads to Petal Meadows. Venturing further down from the warp pipe from the first area leads to a path with no other points of interest aside from a gate that requires Mario to turn thin in order to get through a room filled with pretruding spikes (that requires the help of Vivian to get through). After going down one more warp pipe, Mario will be in a large area that has a large yellow block (which cannot be broken until getting the Super Hammer in Chapter 3) and a gate with a strange little creature running into (until Chapter 2). To the left of this area leads to The Thousand-Year Door itself and just above some stars contains a room with the Black chest inside of it.
Underside of West Rogueport[]
The underside of west Rogueport can be accessed once Mario is able to purchase contact lenses for Zess T. who finally allows Mario to the west side of Rogueport. Mario can then slip into the grates in the center of the area allowing him access to Rougeport Underground of the west side. As soon Mario drops down, he is met with an area full of things such as two doors: one that is red and the other that is blue but is blocked by a stone block (that can only be broken using the Ultra Hammer). There are two hovering platforms to the right that allows Mario to finally access the underground city. There are also two other warp pipes in this area. The one closest to the Save Block leads further down and the one off to the south leads back up into west Rogueport. After going down the warp pipe, Mario ends up in an area that leads to stairs that contains a Boat Panel that Mario can swim across to reach the far east side of Rogueport Underground. In the remake, there is now a door that leads to a room fill of warp pies leading to other areas. Taking another warp pipe south leads to a chamber that contains the entrance to the Pit of 100 Trials.
Pit of 100 Trials[]
As stated above, the lowest level of Rogueport Underground contains the Pit of 100 Trials. The Pit of 100 Trials is a chasm that goes lower and lower into the ground that contains a gauntlet of enemies that Mario can face. The lower the floors get, the stronger the enemies become. The Pit of 100 Trials is home to reoccurring enemies and also ones that can only be fought here. At every 10th floor, Mario can find a large chest containing helpful item (one being the unique Strange Sack that increases is inventory space) as well as a warp pipe leading back to the entrance should Mario want to come back later. At the lowest floor lurks the strongest being in the Pit of 100 Trials, Bonetail, who is the Shadow Queen's strongest pet dragon. Bonetail is quite the powerful foe especially after Mario's grueling quest down the Pit of 100 Trials. Defeating Bonetail earns Mario the Return Postage badge, a badge that deflects half damage back at the enemy.
Warp Pipe room[]
Original[]
In the original version of this game, there are two rooms that leads to Warp Pipes to previously visited areas in the game. The first one contains the Warp Pipes that lead to Petalburg and The Great Tree. However, Mario must have acquired the Super Hammer after completing Chapter 3 in order to make use of this room. Going west from this room leads to a second room that contains two more Warp Pipes, one leading to Keelhaul Key and the last one leading to Poshley Heights. However, there is a large Metal Block blocking the switch to activate the Warp Pipes requiring Mario to get the Ultra Hammer from within the giant chest in Rogueport first (which, in turn, requires the Ultra Boots after completing Chapter 6). These Warp Pipe rooms are located directly in-between West and East Rogueport Underground.
Remake[]
In the remake, the Warp Pipe room undergoes a massive change. The most notable change being that, instead of two seperate rooms containing large blocks blocking switches, the Warp Pipe room is now one large room that contains Warp Pipes leading to every major location in the game. Unlike with the original, the remake's room Warp Pipes automatically get unlocked each time Mario updates his Magical Map at the Thousand-Year Door. This room also still contains a large yellow block and a large metal block in the back. Another major change to this room is that, as stated previously, the Warp Pipes now lead to every location visited in the game. This includes Glitzville, Twilight Town, and Fahr Outpost which previously couldn't been visited via Warp Pipes. These Warp Pipes are also numbered accordingly with the ground around them showing the patterns of the levels that are associated with them and the player can read the front of them in order to tell which leads to which. Finally, there is a normal green Warp Pipe towards the bottom that leads back to the main plaza of Rogueport, allowing Mario to quickly access the room. This room is especially helpful for completing troubles at the Trouble Center or getting to previous locations that require extra steps to get to each time (such as taking the blimp to get to Glitzville).
