Regional Coins (ローカルコイン Rōkaru koin?, lit. Local coin) are one of the main collectibles in Super Mario Odyssey. They are purple and can be used to buy outfits, stickers and souvenirs. There are either 100, 50, or 0 located in each kingdom, and their shape and design vary in each kingdoms.

Super Mario Odyssey[]
Regional coins first appear in Super Mario Odyssey. They can only be used in their corresponding kingdoms to buy outfits, stickers and souvenirs in the Crazy Cap stores. There are fifty or one hundred located in most kingdoms for a total of one thousand, and their shape and design vary in each kingdom. After being collected, they are replaced with clear replicas which are worth two regular coins. The Cloud Kingdom, Ruined Kingdom, Dark Side, and Darker Side do not have regional coins. When a regional coin is collected for the first time, it makes a sound that resembles the combination of gold coins and Star Bits.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]
Regional coins reappear in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate where the regional coins from the Metro Kingdom, as well as the aforementioned sound effect heard when a new regional coin is collected, can occasionally be seen during Mario's Super Jump Punch in place of regular coins from Super Mario 64 or Star Coins from the New Super Mario Bros. series of games.
Types of Regional Coins[]
- City Coins - Purple-colored regional coins that feature Mayor Pauline's portrait on one side, the city landscape on the other, and decorative stars on both, as well as a reeded edge. It resembles an old Flowing Hair dollar coin, the first American dollar coin manufactured between 1794 and 1795. They are a series of coins that can only be used in the New Donk City's Crazy Cap.
- Pyramid Coins - These regional coins are purple-colored upside down pyramid shaped. Their overall design reflects the main landmark of Tostarena, the Inverted Pyramid. They are a series of coins that can only be used in Tostarena's Crazy Cap.
- Bolt Nuts - These regional coins are purple-colored bolts shaped. They are a series of coins that can only be used in the Steam Gardens's Crazy Cap.
- Polygonal Tomatoes - These regional coins are purple-colored tomatoes shaped, whose crystal-like shape resembles the stylized produce of Mount Volbono. They are a series of coins that can only be used in the Mount Volbono's Crazy Cap.
- Top Hats - These regional coins are purple-colored top hat shaped. They're specifically flat coins resembling that top hats. They are a series of coins that can only be used in the Bonneton's Crazy Cap.
- Stone Discs - These regional coins are purple-colored disc shaped. Inspired by rai stones, an old form of currency of the Yap Islands in Micronesia. They are a series of coins that can only be used in Fossil Falls' Crazy Cap.
- Leaves - These regional coins are purple-colored leaf shaped, that resemble the designs of Super Leaves. They are a series of coins that can only be used in the Forgotten Isle's Crazy Cap.
- Shells - These regional coins are purple-colored seashells shaped, whose designed after the shells of scallops, which are commonly associated with seashells. They are a series of coins that can only be used in the Bubblaine's Crazy Cap.
- Snowflakes - These regional coins are purple-colored snowflake shaped. They are a series of coins that can only be used in the Shiveria's Crazy Cap.
- Star Coins - Purple-colored regional coins that star stamp design is similar to the coins found in Super Mario 64. They also resemble Purple Coins from Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. They are a series of coins that can only be used in the Peach's Castle's Crazy Cap.
- Fish Scale - These regional coins are purple-colored fish scale shaped, that represent the Lochladies. They are a series of coins that can only be used in the Lake Lamode's Crazy Cap.
- Star Bits - These regional coins that appears to be similar to the Star Bits from Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. They are a series of coins that can only be used in the Honeylune Ridge's Crazy Cap.
- Bowser's Coins - Purple-colored regional coins that appears to be similar to the Dragon Coin from the Super Mario World Series. They are a series of coins that can only be used in the Bowser's Kingdom's Crazy Cap.
