Super Mario Super Smash Bros. Mario + Rabbids

A Red Ring is a recurring object in the Super Mario series. They first appear in New Super Mario Bros..

Description[]

When Mario or another character goes through or touch a Red Ring, it vanishes, and Red Coins are temporarily spawned. In most appearance, activating a Red Ring causes eight Red Coins to appear, but some appearances instead have it at five Red Coins. Once every Red Coin has been collected, a random power-up, usually a Fire Flower, or a 1-Up Mushroom if the character is fully-powered, spawns above their head and drops. In multiplayer, starting with New Super Mario Bros. Wii, a power-up spawns over each playable character onscreen, except those in a bubble.

In New Super Mario Bros. 2 similar rings called Gold Rings that turn most enemies in a level golden (golden enemies award escalating sums of coins when defeated as well as certain enemies having different behaviours such as Boos running away whilst leaving a trail of coins) appear, and Green Rings in New Super Mario Bros. and New Super Luigi U make five bunches of three Green Coins appear, but these must be collected in a certain order.

In Super Mario series[]

If Mario or Luigi manage to collect all eight Red Coins appearing from a Red Ring, and item reward spawns above him, dropping a few seconds later. However, the item that drops depends on Mario or Luigi's current form: a Super Mushroom for the Small form or Mini form; a Fire Flower for the Super form; and a 1-Up Mushroom for the Fire form or Shell form. Touching a Red Ring adds 1,000 points to the score.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[]

Red Rings retain their function from New Super Mario Bros.. However, in multiplayer, collecting all eight Red Coins from a Red Ring causes an item to appear above each character onscreen, except for those trapped inside of a bubble.

A difference from before is that if a character is in their Super form, the power-up reward can be either a Fire Flower, a Propeller Mushroom, an Ice Flower, or a Penguin Suit, depending on the level. Like with the Fire form, the Ice form, Propeller form, and Penguin form also have a 1-Up Mushroom as a Red Ring reward.

Super Mario 3D Land[]

This is a Red Ring's first appearance in a 3D Super Mario game. Unlike before, touching a Red Ring instead causes five Red Coins to appear instead of eight. Like in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, the Red Ring reward for if Mario or Luigi is in his Super form is relative to the level, although the possible rewards are instead either a Fire Flower, a Super Leaf, a Statue Leaf, or a Boomerang Flower. Just as before, the Red Ring reward for if Mario or Luigi are fully powered up is a 1-Up Mushroom.

New Super Mario Bros. 2[]

Red Rings serve nearly the same function as in the previous New Super Mario Bros. games. However, depending on the Red Ring, Red Coins do not necessarily remain idle while in the air, and some instead descend from the sky with a parachute attached to it or are dropped by a hopping Coin Coffer. In a Warp Cannon level or Rainbow Course, the Red Ring reward is instead a Gold Flower. Either a Fire Flower or a Super Leaf will appear if Mario or Luigi collects the eighth Red Coin while in his Super form.

In Coin Rush mode, the 1-Up Mushroom generally rewarded to Mario or Luigi while they are powered-up is instead a Gold Mushroom.

New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[]

Red Rings make a reappearance, functioning the same as before. Red Rings were also given a variation, the Green Ring, which functions similarly, except it generates Green Coins. In New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, the Red Ring reward for Toadette is usually a Super Crown.

Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[]

Red Rings make their second appearance in a 3D Super Mario game, but unlike in Super Mario 3D Land, a Red Ring produces eight Red Coins instead of five. Depending on the level, a Red Ring reward can be either a Super Bell, a Fire Flower, a Super Leaf, or a Boomerang Flower, even if the characters are powered-up.

Super Mario Run[]

Like in Super Mario 3D Land, when Mario goes through a Red Ring, only five Red Coins appear. Unlike other games, collecting every Red Coin instead yields a Starman reward.

Crossover appearances[]

Super Smash Bros. series[]

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS[]

Red Rings appear in the Golden Plains stage, and like with most appearances, passing through a Red Ring spawns eight Red Coins, but unlike before, each Red Coin is instead worth five coins.

This game marks the first instance in which Red Rings appear outside a Super Mario game, let alone the Mario franchise.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]

Red Rings appear in the returning Golden Plains stage.

Mario + Rabbids series[]

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle[]

Red Rings can be found in the overworld, and as usual, they produce eight Red Coins. Unlike other games, the Red Ring reward is instead a treasure chest containing a new weapon. There are three Red Rings for each world and an additional four around Peach's Castle, making there a total of sixteen Red Rings.

Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope[]

Red Rings retain the same role as in Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, although a Red Ring reward is instead both a Planet Coin and a treasure chest containing coins rather than a new weapon. One Red Ring appears on all five planets.
