Red Koopa Troopas are one of the color variants of Koopa Troopa, particularly those wearing a Red Shell. They first appeared in Super Mario Bros. alongside their standard green counterparts. In some appearances, especially spinoff series, Red Koopa Troopas are no different in behavior from regular Koopa Troopas.
In Super Mario series[]
Super Mario Bros.[]
The only difference that Red Koopa Troopas have from the regular green Koopa Troopas is their mindfulness of edges, so if a Red Koopa Troopa walks to an edge, it turns around instead of walking off.
Like regular Koopa Troopas, stomping a Red Koopa Troopa causes it to retreat into its shell, which can then be kicked. Another similarity is that Red Koopa Troopas can be defeated from either having Mario or Luigi shooting a fireball at it while in their Fire form or by touching it while invincible. Defeating a Red Koopa Troopa earns the player 100 points.
Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels[]
Red Koopa Troopas are the same as in Super Mario Bros., and like many other features, reuses its sprite from Super Mario Bros..
Super Mario Bros. 3[]
Red Koopa Troopas retain their distinction from Super Mario Bros. of not walking off the edge of a platform. Defeating one earns the player 100 points, just as before.
Super Mario World[]
Here, Red Koopa Troopas are not the only color variation of the regular green type, given that yellow and blue Koopa Troopas were also introduced. Each one yields 200 points upon being defeated. This is the first appearance in which both green and red Koopa Troopas walk upright, which they would also do in a majority of their subsequent appearances.
In Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island[]
Both Red and Green Koopa Troopas are sometimes encountered as enemies. The overall boss of World 4, Hookbill the Koopa, is a giant Red Koopa Troopa enlarged by Kamek.
In Super Princess Peach[]
Red Koopa Troopas return as enemies, and they are first encountered in Ladida Plains 1-3. Red Koopa Troopas were also given another variant, Glad Red Koopas, which are imbued with the Joy vibe.
