The Red Coin Field is a hidden minicourse accessed from Delfino Plaza in Super Mario Sunshine.
Layout[]
Red Coin Field takes place on a large, square-shaped area in the sky. The grass is very tall, and there are Pokey Sprouts and Seedy Pods hiding in the grass. A Pianta on fire can be found frantically running around the grass. There is a Watermelon next to a square hole near the edge of the field, both featuring an alcove hidden underneath it. A few tall, brown structures as well as palm trees are also placed around the grass. There is a Red Bird flying around, and it is the only Red Bird in the game.
There is no water in the Red Coin Field, so Mario cannot refill FLUDD's water tank here. As such, if FLUDD's water tank is empty, the course is unwinnable unless Mario exits the level, refills FLUDD's water supply, and re-enters the area.
Objective[]
The only Shine Sprite is obtained by collecting eight red coins throughout the field. Their locations are as allows:
- Four red coins can be obtained by Mario defeating the two Pokey Sprouts and two Seedy Pods respectively.
- One of the red coins is on a brown structure.
- Mario has to douse the flames on a Pianta and then talk to him for a red coin.
- There is a Red Bird that, when sprayed with enough water, drops a red coin.
- In a hidden alcove within the field, accessed by breaking the Watermelon Block.
In Super Mario Sunshine[]
Red Coin Field is accessed from a Warp Pipe located in the northwest area of Delfino Plaza. The pipe can usually be reached using the Rocket Nozzle, but it can also be reached using either the Hover Nozzle, Turbo Nozzle, or Yoshi by jumping on the high trees leading up to the pipe. During the event where Delfino Plaza is flooded, the water level is right below the palm tree tops, making the pipe even easier to reach.
Trivia[]
- If Mario sprays the Pokey Sprouts off the field, he cannot obtain their red coins unless he restarts the level.
- In the Japanese version, the game crashes if Mario obtains 100 coins in the Red Coin Field, because there is no spawn point for its Shine Sprite. To get 100 coins, Mario first has to collect 96 to 99 coins in Delfino Plaza and then enter the Red Coin Field. Here, Mario can then spray one of two Pokey Sprouts against a wall so that it drops both two yellow coins and one red coin. In international versions, a spawn point was added, but collecting this Shine Sprite counts as the 100-coin Shine for Delfino Plaza.
