Red-Hot Log Rolling is the fourth mission of Lethal Lava Land in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS.

Layout[]

The general layout of Lethal Lava Land remains unchanged for Red-Hot Log Rolling, so it is possible to complete within a different mission.

Objective[]

Mario (or Yoshi, Luigi, or Wario in Super Mario 64 DS) has to use a rolling log to travel over to the opposite side, where the Power Star can be collected.

To reach the rolling log, Mario has to head away from the bridge and the Mr. I on the wire platform. When Mario reaches the volcano, he must turn right onto the S-shaped walkway. When Mario reaches a platform with two Bullies. He must then go onto a steel-grated platform that slowly travels over to the rolling log and avoid the Lava Plumes along the path. When Mario gets onto the rolling log, he must roll it to the left a few times until the log reaches the end of the rail it is placed on. Mario then has to jump onto a narrow path against the mesh gate to find the Power Star.

Despite the mission's title, there are other methods to collect the Power Star that does not involve using the rolling log. One way is having Mario collect a Wing Cap near the start to become Wing Mario and fly over to the Power Star. In Super Mario 64 DS, Luigi's invisibility powers from the Power Flower can be used to phase through the mesh gate barricading the Power Star by performing a Backward Somersault at the right end of the starting platform. The Nintendo DS remake also has another method where if Red-Hot Log Rolling is indirectly accessed via re-entering either the fifth mission, Hot-Foot-It into the Volcano, or the sixth mission, Inside the Volcano, provided either one has been completed out of sequential order, a Shiny Shell can be summoned from a ! Block added toward the end of the starting platform to ride over to the platform with the Power Star.
