"Let's start building, shall we!? My world of perfect solitude!"
—Reclusa declares the start of a new world of solitude after he awakens in Mario & Luigi: Brothership.

Reclusa is a character from Mario & Luigi: Brothership, serving as the overarching antagonist and the true final boss. He is an ancient entity who was responsible for destroying various worlds before arriving on Concordia, where Cozette discovered his egg. Zokket, created as the leader of the Zokket Army from her body, serves Reclusa and spends the game trying to resurrect it using a dangerous substance called Glohm to further his goals of destroying Concordia and putting everyone in solitude. After Zokket's demise, Reclusa's egg gathers enough of the toxic substance to facilitate his awakening, and he takes over as the main villain of the final leg of the game. He is the first antagonist in the Mario & Luigi franchise to not be associated or serve as a form of Bowser.

Profile[]

Physical Appearance[]

Reclusa has multiple forms that he takes throughout the game.

Egg form[]

At first, Reclusa appears as an egg with a single yellow eye glaring out. It has a black shell with red crackles. When it is about to awaken, more cracks form in the shell.

True form[]

In his true form, Reclusa has a head resembling a computer, with the screen serving as his face, which goes blank when Mario and Luigi finally manage to put him down. His eyes are usually mismatched, with one being blue and the other yellow, and his mouth has jagged, red teeth. His mood changing may cause his face to change: in his angry state, one of his eyes turns red with the other purple. His dizzy and sad states are the only times his eyes match in their colour, with the former having his eyes cyan and the other manifesting as yellow spirals. If the player uses a 3D Green Shell, the Flash Clock, or a regular Hammer attack, Reclusa's face will change to a face resembling that of a Concordian (which in turn resembles a Type B regional outlet).

Reclusa's body in this form resembles Cackletta's dress, with his neck being surrounded by a white frill. Four arms with red fingers protrude from the monster's body, with two coming from behind his head and another two coming from the shoulders where you would expect arms on a humanoid being.

Weeping Reclusa[]

During the final battle, Reclusa has two more forms that he can assume. Weeping Reclusa is the name of the form the monster assumes when fusing with the Soli-Tree, manifesting as a sentient tree monster with dark purple bark, glowing eyes, and pentadactyl hands at the end of two large branches.

Weeping Core[]

When he is confronted inside his Weeping Reclusa form, Reclusa will transform into the Weeping Core, which is a white plated ball with a single eye and blood red spikes.

Personality[]

Reclusa is shown to be very dramatic and insane, with an extreme loathing of the concept of bonds to an extent that he is willing to trap his enemies in artificial dream worlds, which would kill anyone subjected to this fate by the monster due to the body being exposed to the elements. His response to Snoutlet asking him how the victims would survive getting trapped by his flowers in their fantasies indicates that he is very sadistic, as he not only acknowledges that they would inevitably die in this state, but takes glee in it as well. He is also shown to be very childish, being very dramatic in his words and posturing, breaking out into a sing-song dialogue, comparing everything to toys that he breaks for fun, flying into a rage when things do not go hia way, and, in the Japanese version, addressing himself with the pronoun Boku-chin (written 僕-朕 in Kanji, ぼく-ちん in Hiragana and ボク-チン in Katakana), which is generally reserved for young boys. Because of this, Reclusa is hated by everyone, as Connie states that he has no place in Concordia and should just disappear in his last moments.

History[]

Backstory[]

"Everyone carries some Glohm with them. Dark feelings... Loneliness... Disconnectedness... Reclusa's a monster that turns lonely feelings into energy. And he's been around since long before any of us were born. He hatches from an egg and fills the world with loneliness... When his power is used up, he recharges in his egg."
Shun explains Reclusa's backstory.

As Shun states when the heroes get his, Ecks', and Ten's Bond, Reclusa has been around before anyone was born. He also states that he uses his egg to recharge his power upon destroying a world, and that the only way to stop this cycle is to kill him. This implies that his attacks on the worlds he visited prior to his arrival on Concordia were successful.

Before the events of the game, Cozette, the Uni-Tree's original caretaker, accidentally found Reclusa's egg. When she came into contact with the egg, she was brainwashed by Reclusa into becoming his obedient servant. Zokket, leader of the Zokket Army, was created from Cozette's body, and tended to his egg until he would awaken.

In Mario & Luigi: Brothership[]

Reclusa is first seen proper in the present day Mario & Luigi: Brothership when Mario, Luigi, and Snoutlet storm King Bowser's fortress. The creature is in egg form, while Zokket mutters under his breath about how there is not enough Glohm to facilitate the monster's rebirth. The egg is later seen as Zokket fights Mario and Luigi, and one can see it in the background. Zokket, after being defeated by the Bros. gives up the last of his life energy, allowing the monster to reawaken. The moment he awakens, Reclusa immediately causes havoc by trapping the Concordians. He then retreates to his fortress, the Soli-Tree, where Mario and Luigi would eventually confront him after amassing enough energy from Bonds, including from Cozette, who was retrieved and revived after Zokket's defeat.

During their invasion of the fortress, the Bros. are put to sleep by Reclusa's flowers, but manage to escape, much to his chagrin. He retreats deeper into the fortress, where he deploys his minions, but Bowser kills Reclusa's minions. Mario and Luigi continue deeper, where they and Reclusa face off. After a long, arduous battle, Reclusa is destroyed. When Connie, who had arrived on the scene during the fight, calls out how selfish he was to force everyone into solitude, Reclusa flies into a rage and rants about how "it was not supposed to go this way." She responds to his rant by saying he lost to the heroes' bonds and should just disappear, after which Reclusa succumbs to his wounds and his body disintegrates, followed by the Soli-Tree as the gang gets away.

Battle[]

Phase 1 (Chase)[]

Reclusa's battle is a multi-phase battle that takes place throughout the Soli-Tree. During the first phase of the fight, he continuously flees in his normal form as the Bros. ride a Plug that Snoutlet created as a flying craft. As they chase the monster, the Bros. have to avoid Doom Bloom shots, which they can neutralise by blasting those shots with the opposite element. The Bros. use their elemental suits during the chase scene: Mario uses his Fire suit, while Luigi dons his Ice suit. The chase will eventually end with the Bros. catching up to Reclusa, who will charge up with either fire or ice to attack them; Luigi must attack in the former scenario and Mario in the latter. If the Bros. succeed in neutralising the attack, they can blast Reclusa with a Bro Bomb to stun him for one turn. Occasionally during the chase, Mario and Luigi may be forced to deal with Doom Blooms and Glohm-infected enemies. After he takes enough damage, Reclusa will merge with the Soli-Tree, transforming into Weeping Reclusa.

Reclusa is a Level 45 enemy that has 4,812 hit points, an attack power of 250, a defense of 214, and a speed of 582.

Phase 2 (Weeping Reclusa)[]

During the second phase of the battle, Reclusa, as Weeping Reclusa, cannot be targeted directly, and he calls four Doom Blooms, one of which captures Snoutlet. Weeping Reclusa has three attacks during this phase, with his first attack being to swing his arms low. The Bros. must jump to avoid getting hit by the beast's hands, getting launched and sustaining damage if they fail; if the player has the Easy-Peasy Counters Battle Plug, Mario and Luigi can extend their jump for long enough to avoid the arm completely, though flames will creep in from the same side as the swung arm. If a Bro. lands on the swinging arm, he will be carried high and then tossed onto the other Bro. and must be caught to avoid damage. The monster's second move has a flurry of fireballs and snowballs raining down. These must be countered with hammer strikes. The third attack has a green spiked ball falling at the Bros., who must use a hammer strike to send it back at Weeping Reclusa, stunning him for a few turns. If the Bros. have freed Snoutlet, Luigi can use his Luigi Logic skill to have Snoutlet create another plug craft to fly into Weeping Reclusa's maw. As they close in on Weeping Reclusa's maw, the Bros. have to avoid his projectiles and sharp protrusions. When they reach his maw, he will launch Glohm energy which the Bros. must repel with a Bro Bomb. If their Bro Bomb successfully repels the attack, the Bros. enter Weeping Reclusa's maw, leading to the third phase of the fight.

Phase 3 (Weeping Core)[]

The third phase begins when Reclusa realizes that he is not alone and transforms into the Weeping Core. In this form, he takes measures to repel Mario and Luigi's Special Attacks should he get hit by the same one more than once; the first two times the monster gets hit by the attack, he will not resist, though he will analyze the attack, saying "Analysing [name of attack]."

Reclusa has two attacks as the Weeping Core. His first move involves him rolling into the Bros., with his rolling charges having to be repelled with hammer strikes; for the last one, he must be repelled by both Bros. simultaneously. In his second attack, Reclusa extends his spikes and spins them, forcing Mario and Luigi to jump the spikes to avoid getting slashed for damage. Reclusa's direction of rotation and speed may change during the attack to throw the player off.

When the Weeping Core breaks from dealing enough damage, Reclusa emerges in his normal form from the wreckage to commence the fourth phase of the fight as he turns the background red.

This form is a Level 46 monster with 5,100 hit points, an attack power of 285, a defense of 397, and a speed of 620.

Phase 4 (Final (?) Reclusa)[]

Reclusa returns to fighting in his normal form during this phase. He has three attacks in this form. In one, he creates six copies of himself. During this attack, some of the Reclusa can flash emblems of the Bros., launching energy bullets at their respective targets. When he loses at least half of his health in this form, Reclusa creates a seventh clone in the attack. The bullets have to be repelled with hammer strikes, with the first few being fired one at a time and the rest being fired simultaneously. His copies merge back with him when the attack ends. His second attack in this form has him drain a Bro.'s color to disable him, so the other Bro. is forced to carry him. The still-active Bro. has to dodge Reclusa's claws and energy blasts during this attack. More energy blasts are fired when Reclusa's health runs low. The barrage is ended by a large fireball being thrown, and the colored Bro. has to use his hammer to repel him. Afterward, the greyed-out Bro. will regain his colour, ending the attack. Reclusa's third and final attack in this phase is not used until his health drops to half or below; during this one, he fires four to six energy blasts from his claws, with all but the last one being instantaneous and targeting one Bro. at a time (depending on the letter that he shows on his face: M for Mario and L for Luigi). For the last strike, Reclusa will fire a larger energy blast that causes a shockwave that the initial target must jump over first, followed by his partner. In this phase, he is of Level 46 with 10,000 hit points, with his attack power, defense, and speed being 290, 250, and 602, respectively.

After he has his health reduced to 0 during this phase, Reclusa destroys the arena floor so Mario and Luigi would fall to their doom.

True Final Phase (Final Descent)[]

This phase is a real-time timed battle where Mario and Luigi must bash Reclusa's head with their hammers before they hit the ground (which leads to an automatic loss for them). The Bros. must charge Bond power to add more strength to their blows. Mario and Luigi win when they land ten charged hits to Reclusa's head.

Behind the Scenes[]

Etymology[]

The name "Reclusa" comes from the word "recluse" (another term for a "shut-in"), from French recluse, past participle of reclure.

Nomenclature[]

In the Japanese version of the game, Reclusa is referred to as Botchiāni (written ボッチアーニ), which comes from botchi ("loner"; written ぼっち) and the Latin first/second declenson -ānus, which is used to form adjectives that denote pertaining to someone. In Chinese, it is called Dúgū Yàní (written 独孤亚霓), from Dúgū (a Chinese surname referencing the fictional swordsman Dugu Quiabi as well as an anagram of gūdú (solitary); written 独孤); the final Yàní in his name may come from the same aforementioned Latin suffix -ānus as the Japanese name. The Spanish dub translates the being's name as Ysoleth, from aislar ("to isolate"), while Portuguese gives it the name Rekluso, an intentional misspelling of recluso ("isolated," "confined," past participle of recluir ("to confine")). The monster's name in Italian is formed from a clipping of isolare ("to isolate"), resulting in Ysoll. The German dub calls it the name Amperfide, from the unit of electric current ampere and perfide ("perfidious") French translates its name as Solima, from solitaire ("solitary," "loner," "hermit"). Dutch uses the monster's Portuguese name to form its Dutch name, Recluso. In Korean, the monster's name is Wetorikeu (written 외토리크), from wetori ("loner," written 외토리); the final -keu could come from "trick" transliterated into Korean, which would result in teurikeu (written 트리크).

Trivia[]

  • If the title screen displays the Soli-Tree and the player leaves it alone, Reclusa pops up on both sides of the screen before popping up from the bottom to laugh at the camera.[1]
  • Though some lore is given, the exact origins of Reclusa remain unknown.
  • Reclusa's modus operandī resembles a computer virus, going from world to world infecting them with Glohm to destroy them from within, not unlike how computer virī destroy their target computer from within.
  • Reclusa's Weeping Core form bears a resemblance to the Mother Brain from the Metroid games and the Kracko from the Kirby games.
  • Reclusa's third phase as the Weeping Core makes it one of two bosses in the game where attacking more than once with the same Special Attack becomes detrimental, due to the monster analysing the oncoming attack and taking measures to sabotage them. The other is the Great Conductor, though unlike Reclusa, the Great Conductor allows the attack to be performed safely and will merely voice disappointment that the player did not choose another.
  • Reclusa's behavior and physiology is similar to that of Majin Buu, a villainous character from the Dragon Ball franchise. Both are extremely destructive and chaotic monsters who have destroyed numerous worlds in cycle of hibernation. They both periodically retreat into an egg of sorts and require a large amount of energy to emerge once more, utilizing an outside force into providing them with this
