"Raiders of the Lost Mushroom" is the forty-ninth animated episode of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!.

Plot[]

Mario and the gang arrive in Jungleland to look for a wish-granting statue called the Lost Mushroom. An Albatoss suddenly pops the hot-air balloon they're traveling in, and they land in a quicksand pit. Luckily, they're rescued by the local hero Indiana Joe, who agrees to lead them to where the Lost Mushroom is held. However, King Koopa (who calls himself Kolonel von Koop) is also after the statue, claiming it was left to him by "his great-great-Grandkoop". He decides to follow the protagonists and then steal the Lost Mushroom away from them once they've found it.

Joe leads the good guys to the Temple of Koopa, but does not accompany them inside as he has a fear of Koopas. They go inside without him and manage to find the Lost Mushroom after eluding all of the enemies inside the temple. However, Mario and the group finds that they are trapped in the Lost Mushroom's chamber and Mario wishes for a trapdoor. The Lost Mushroom grants his wish and they fall through a trapdoor to the outside. Just as they arrive outside, though, Kolonel von Koop and his minions appear and take the Lost Mushroom. Despite the fact that both sides are evenly matched, the good guys let Bowser take them captive. He locks them up with a lion wearing a Shy Guy mask. Mario, however, manages to subdue said lion with a plumber's snake, and he recommends they go find Indiana Joe to help them again.

When they find Joe, they find he's decided to leave the adventuring business and go into babysitting. They manage to talk him out of it, though, because he decides that Bowser shouldn't be too much of a problem compared to the kids he has to look after. With Joe's help, they manage to snatch the Lost Mushroom out of Bowser's clutches and force him to retreat. Mario later uses the Lost Mushroom to wish for a mountain of spaghetti, saying he's going to get along fine with the statue (although, naturally, it's gone by the next episode).

Trivia/Goofs[]

  • The episode's title is a spoof of the 1981 Indiana Jones film, Raiders of the Lost Ark." Likewise, Indiana Joe is a parody of the Jones character, and Bowser's alter-ego is based off of the villains of that film.
  • The good guys' mode of transportation at the beginning, a hot-air balloon with the emblem on Mario's hat, very much resembles the one that appears in the introduction sequence of Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2.
  • The arm bands worn by Bowser's men resemble the arm bands worn by the Nazis. They also change from red to black in some scenes.
  • Even though the warp zone made by Bowser's potion closes, it reopens in the next scene.
