- For one of Mario's power-ups, see Raccoon Mario.
Raccoons are a species in Super Mario Sunshine.
Profile[]
Physical description[]
Raccoons are directly based on the real-world Japanese raccoon dogs. They wear a yellow sash, a sun hat, and blue pants. A few of a Raccoon's physical features originate from the tanuki statues in real-world Japan, including the sun hat and sash.
Habitats[]
Raccoons live on Isle Delfino. They are presumably the rarest species found there, given that Mario only encounters three of them in total.
In Super Mario Sunshine[]
Mario first encountered two Raccoons in Delfino Plaza, where a father and son Raccoon run the Boathouse together. Here, Mario can trade in ten Blue Coins at once for a Shine Sprite. Mario cannot give any more or less than ten Blue Coins to the Raccon.
In Noki Bay, there is another adult Raccoon who owns a small rowboat shack. A sign near the shop says that the boats can be rented for 90,000 coins, a number which Mario cannot obtain. After Mario completes the Uncork the Waterfall episode, the shack owner allows Mario to use his boats for free.
