Rabbits are a real-world furry mammal known for their ability to hop and run fast. Rabbits have made some appearances within the Mario franchise, with Super Mario 64 being their first appearance in a Mario game.
In the Super Mario series[]
Super Mario 64[]
Only one yellow rabbit named MIPS makes an appearance, and he appears on the basement floor of Princess Peach's Castle on two separate occasions: the first time is after obtaining at least 15 Power Stars and the second time is after having at least 50 Power Stars. Each time, Mario can catch MIPS to obtain one of the castle's two secret stars.
Super Mario 64 DS[]
While MIPS does not reappear, there are a variety of rabbits found throughout Peach's Castle, both inside and outside. The first Rabbit is found at the start of the game, and Yoshi must catch it to acquire a key that unlocks the front door of Peach's Castle, allowing him to enter.
Whenever a Rabbit is caught for the first time, it gives the playable character a key that unlocks a certain minigame. The color of the Rabbits that appear depend on which character is currently being played: yellow for Yoshi, pink for Mario, green for Luigi, and orange for Wario. Each character has a total of seven rabbits to catch, making for a total of 28 rabbits, excluding the one who gives Yoshi a Key to the castle at the start. Rabbits continue to appear even after being caught, but catching one again does not yield any item and merely causes the Rabbit to complain.
There are also eight Glowing Rabbits, which randomly take the place of the normal rabbits after obtaining at least 50 Power Stars. Catching all of these rabbits earns the playable characters a key to the white door in the character room, which they can enter to obtain a secret Power Star. Two of Mario's, one of Wario's, and one of Yoshi's rabbits can be found in the same location as MIPS was found in the original game.

Super Mario 3D World[]
Rabbits have been recolored to pink, an. The player's character is rewarded with an item, such as a power-up or coins, from catching rabbits. Rabbits surrounded by a green light carry a Green Power Star.
Super Mario Odyssey[]
Rabbits have been changed to gray with black top-hats, appropriately fitting the "hat" theme. They appear all over the Mushroom Earth, and if Mario catches one, he earns a Power Moon, similar to how the green-glowing Rabbits in Super Mario 3D World grant a Green Star. Many rabbits, if not all of them, live in the Dark Side, evidenced by the fact that it's nicknamed "Rabbit Ridge" and there are many rabbits found there.
Some of the Rabbits are villains, including the Broodals, who also live on the Dark Side, and Madame Broode.
In the Mario Party series[]
Mario Party Advance features a minigame named Grabbit, in which the goal is to grab at least a certain number of rabbits within the time limit.
