Raarghs are orange, fish-like enemies which first appear in Super Mario Bros. Wonder.

Description[]

Raarghs are limbless lava creatures with dark brown, yellow eyes. They have a reddish-orange head, and their body starts off with the same thickness and an orange cover and gets yellower and yellower closer to their tail, which has three pronged. Their design makes them resemble a Podoboo combined with a Magmaargh.

Behaviour[]

Raarghs are lava enemies that only appear in the level Rarrghs in the Ruins, which is found in Deep Magma Bog. Unprovoked, Raarghs do not move, but if they see a player, they charge straight forward in the direction they were facing. Raarghs can be destroyed by luring them into colliding with the environment or each other, and their charge attack can activate Rotating Blocks and Mystery Blocks. Several seconds after the Raarghs are destroyed, they will respawn where they originally lived.

Behind the Scenes[]

Name[]

Raarghs derive their name from "raargh," which is a roaring onomatopoeia.

Nomenclature[]

In Japanese, Raarghs are called Ūron (written ウーロン), their name being a portumanteau of Ūgan (the Japanese name of the Magmaargh; written ウーガン) and the Chinese word lóng ("dragon;" written 龍). Their Chinese name is Wūlóng Róngyán (written 乌龙熔岩), which literally means "Oolong Magmaargh." In Spanish, the enemy is called Lavonchof, coming from Lavóncio (Magmaargh) and chof, an onomatopoeia for splashing. Portuguese refers to the creature as Leomaargo (from leão (lion) and the Magmaargh's English name). In Italian, the creatures are called Magmadrago, which comes from Magmabruto (the Magmaargh's Italian name) and dragone (dragon). The French dub translates the enemy's name as Dravalave, derived from the Magmaargh's French name, Avalave, with the initial dr- coming from Dragon ("dragon"). In German, the enemy is called Glutdrako, which means "Ember Dragon" and was derived from Glutsauger, the Magmaargh's German name. The Korean dub calls them Jjaja'ryong (written 짜자룡), derived from Jjaja'yong ("Magmaargh;" written 짜자용) and ryong (Sino-Korean for "dragon;" written 룡 or 龍).
