- "Ooof... I sure take a lot of knocks in this line of work. I'm getting too old for this ghost-catching tomfoolery. Anyway, nice to meet you. I'm Professor E. Gadd."
- —Professor E. Gadd's first encounter with Luigi, Luigi's Mansion.
Professor Elvin Gadd, usually referred to Professor E. Gadd, is the deuteragonist of the Luigi's Mansion series and a supporting character in some other Mario games. E. Gadd first appears in Luigi's Mansion for the Nintendo GameCube.
E. Gadd is an eccentric inventor and scientist who is the head of him own company, Gadd Science Inc.. He speaks in an unrecognizable jumble of words and sounds while talking to other characters.
History[]
E. Gadd’s early life is unknown. At some point in the past, E. Gadd lived on the foothills of the Thwomp Volcano, as depicted in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. Unaware Thwomp Volcano eruption, E. Gadd was reading book only to get interrupted in shock by Baby Mario hit a hammer in front of him. Shortly after meeting the future Mario Bros. and helped saving his lab from burning down when fire blocks erupted from the Thwomp Volcano. He then helps the Mario Bros. by inspiring his older present self to create the Hydrogush 4000; as the Mario Bros. are in the present, he starts to get the idea for the device, which transfers to his future self. The present-day Professor E. Gadd uses the Hydrogush 4000 to send water through via time hole and calm the erupting Thwomp Volcano. Afterwards, E. Gadd moves to the Boo Woods when he was around twenty-years-old, where he would later study ghosts. In order to get funding for his ghost research, E. Gadd also started a cafe franchise called Starbeans Cafe.

After figuring out that the Dark Moon has been destroyed and the ghosts soon turn hostile, he enlists the help of Luigi to once again help him in his ghost-hunting quest. E. Gadd now stays in a different location named E. Gadd's Bunker to protect himself from the ghosts. This time, E. Gadd provides Luigi with the equipment Poltergust 5000 and Dual Scream, replacing the Poltergust 3000 and Game Boy Horror from the first game, respectively.
Luigi's Mansion (Nintendo 3DS)[]
While largely retaining his role from the original Nintendo GameCube game, E. Gadd now introduces a new invention: a lime-green doppelgänger of Luigi, called Gooigi, who can be controlled by the second player in local co-op play.
Luigi's Mansion 3[]
E. Gadd provides Luigi with a new Poltergust model, the Poltergust G-00, which has Gooigi stored inside it, as well as a Virtual Boo, which replaces both the Game Boy Horror and Dual Scream from the previous installments. Luigi rescues E. Gadd at the time when his friends were captured by Hellen Gravely at a hotel named The Last Resort.

In Super Mario series[]
Super Mario Sunshine[]
The professor is vaguely referenced in the story of Super Mario Sunshine, although E. Gadd (more specifically his company Gadd Science Inc.) invented the F.L.U.D.D. for Mario to use in cleaning up Isle Delfino, which was caused when Shadow Mario somehow obtained another invention of E. Gadd's, the Magic Paintbrush, and used it to pollute Isle Delfino.
Super Mario Maker[]
In the version 1.32 update, E. Gadd was made available as an unlockable Mystery Mushroom costume.
In Mario & Luigi series[]
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga[]
He is the owner of the Starbeans Cafe in Beanbean Kingdom. If Mario collects enough beans for the coffee maker, he will test the coffee and give his inventions to Mario, one at a time.
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time[]
E. Gadd is the inventor of the time machine that led to the capture of Princess Peach. The younger E. Gadd can be found in the past, after helping him he said something about going to a haunted mansion in Boo Woods. Both the past and present versions of the professor thought of the Hydrogush 4000 during the course of the game; the past E. Gadd used it to extinguish the flames on his laboratory, while the older incarnation used it to pump baby tears into the various Time Holes to get rid of all shroobified objects.
In Mario Party series[]
Mario Party 6[]
Professor E. Gadd is the host of his own party board, E. Gadd's Garage. Here, he operates many machines including a giant fan that sucks coins from other players, a machine that launches orbs on random spaces on the board, and, most commonly, his teleporter machine. E. Gadd also runs the Lab Brats mini-game, where the object is to reach the end of a series of mazes within the time limit. E. Gadd will rank the player on how fast the completed the maze.
Mario Party Advance[]
E. Gadd has invented several Gaddgets that can be acquired by the player throughout the course of the game.
Crossover appearances[]
The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker[]
Professor E. Gadd makes a cameo as one of Tetra's puzzle pieces.
Inventions[]
Professor E. Gadd and his company, Gadd Science Inc., have developed many inventions and tools:
- Poltergust 3000 - A high powered vacuum used to suck up ghosts, which Luigi uses
- F.L.U.D.D. - The Flash Liquidizer Ultra Dousing Device. A water cannon with Artificial Intelligence, which Mario uses.
- Magic Paintbrush - A tool Shadow Mario used to frame Mario by painting graffiti all over Isle Delfino.
- Game Boy Horror - A parody of the Game Boy Color, the Game Boy Horror is a device in Luigi's Mansion with a built-in minimap assisting Luigi in navigating the mansion. It also keeps track of the treasures he has collected and has profiles of Portrait Ghosts he has captured. At one point, E. Gadd even adds a Boo Radar function that can detect if a Boo is nearby.
- Ghost Portrificationizer - The Ghost Portrificationizer is a large machine that works in conjunction with the Poltergust 3000. Certain ghosts captured can be entrapped in portraits to be hung in E. Gadd's gallery. The machine appears in Luigi's Mansion.
- Super Poltergust 3001 - An advanced version of a Poltergust 3000. It has the same functions as the Poltergust 3000, but is much larger thereby allowing it to be ridden on. It might've been a reference to the original Luigi's Mansion, where in the European Hidden Mansion, Luigi must ride on the Poltergust 3000 to defeat the Area 3 boss, Boolossus.
- Time machine - Used by Princess Peach to visit the past at the beginning of Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. It is powered by the Cobalt Star, and then the power of the time holes in the end game.
- DS Time Radar - A handheld device that bears a striking resemblance to a Nintendo DS used briefly by E. Gadd to find Princess Peach in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. It has the ability to pinpoint which time period someone is trapped in.
- Hydrogush 4000 - A large water pump used in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. It's not portable like the F.L.U.D.D., but it does have a lot of power.
- Stuffwell - An intelligent suitcase used by the Mario Bros. on their quest in Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. Its purpose is to manage the brothers' inventory and display their current status.
- Poltergust 4000 - One of Luigi's personal karts used in Mario Kart DS
- Dual Scream - Based on the Nintendo DS and also abbreviated DS, the Dual Scream replaces the Game Boy Horror in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, and it allows Luigi to view the floors and rooms he is at.
- Poltergust 5000 - The newest vacuum. The Poltergust 5000 can now fire Strobe Lights which is now used to stun ghosts.
- Strobulb - A green light bulb object which Luigi now uses to stun ghosts. The Strobulb can also be used to open certain things like vaults and can defeat smaller enemies in one, weak flash like Bats or Spiders.
- Pixelator - An teleporter-like object. E. Gadd uses this to transport Luigi in and out from mansions directly to or from his bunker.
- Dark-Light Device - a unique flashlight-like device that emits a rainbow light and helps Luigi see invisible objects and is the main way to help capture Boos.
- Poltergust G-00 - The newest, upgraded version of the exquisite Poltergust 5000. Luigi first uses this in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, then does so in Luigi's Mansion 3
- Gaddgets - A series of toys that can be acquired by the player throughout Mario Party Advance
