"Oh... Doggie."
Mario, after Luigi's pet Polterpup ate a pice of cake he had in his hand, Luigi's Mansion 3

Polterpup is a character who appears in the Luigi's Mansion series. He is a dog ghost who is a representative of the species of the same name. Polterpup first appears in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon.

Profile[]

Physical description[]

Polterpup can be distinguished from other members of his species in that he wears a red collar.

Personality[]

Polterpup typically has the behavior of a regular dog, and he is friendly unlike several other ghosts. Polterpup is playful, loyal, and energetic. However, in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, Polterpup has interfered with Luigi's quest on a few occasions, often by stealing an item, such as when he stole a clock hand at Old Clockworks. At one point, E. Gadd speculates Polterpup to be lonely and that he sought to gain Luigi's attention.

Polterpup's loyalty is expanded upon in Luigi's Mansion 3, where he acts like a guide to Luigi at the start and occasionally comes to his rescue when he is in true danger, including saving him from drowning and falling to his death. Polterpup's mischievous and hyperactive behavior still is intact as shown when he eats Mario's cake and appears randomly, unintentionally, spooking his owner. Other than his master, Polterpup is extremely friendly and loving towards those around Luigi, perking up and smiling around them, and was willing to befriend Polterkitty, only to be rejected by her, which saddened him.

In Luigi's Mansion series[]

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon[]

Polterpup is first encountered in the Gloomy Manor. While playing in the Mudroom Exterior, Polterpup digs around and finds an amethyst, which he briefly plays with until it gets stuck in a tree. Following this, Polterpup leaves the Gloomy Manor. Unlike the other ghosts, Polterpup is unaffected by the absence of the Dark Moon.

Polterpup is next seen in the Haunted Towers, during the mission Pool Party. When Luigi discovers the special key, Polterpup runs up and takes it from him. This starts the mission Doggone Key, in which Luigi has to retrieve the key from Polterpup. Luigi manages to capture Polterpup, but before he can store him in the Ghost Container, Polterpup manages to escape from his Poltergust 5000 and runs off. E. Gadd believes Polterpup to be lonely and that he wants to play with someone, even if Polterpup causes mischief along the way.

Polterpup taking Gold Bone LMDM

Polterpup takes a Gold Bone from an unconscious Luigi, allowing him to get back up and resume his journey.

If Luigi loses all of his Heart Points but has at least one Gold Bone, a brief scene plays in which Polterpup comes to take the Gold Bone before pouncing on Luigi to wake him up.

During Luigi's journey, Polterpup is next seen in the Old Clockworks, where he steals the second clock hand from a group of Greenies and swallows it. During the the mission Play Catch, Luigi has to chase after Polterpup a second time and capture him in the Poltergust 5000. Before Polterpup can be stored away, he manages to escape the Poltergust 5000 yet again.

Polterpup appears again at the Treacherous Mansion. Just before Luigi can go through the front door, Polterpup jumps out of the keyhole, knocks the key out of Luigi's hand, and runs off with it to the mansion's basement. For the mission Front-Door Key, Luigi has to track down and capture Polterpup. This time, Polterpup does not escape, and he is stored within the Ghost Container.

In the ending, after the Dark Moon had been restored, following King Boo's defeat, Polterpup and the other ghosts are released from the Ghost Container. Polterpup approaches Luigi and expresses remorse of interfering a few times on his journey. Luigi forgives Polterpup and cheers him up. After Polterpup takes a celebratory photograph alongside Luigi, Mario, E. Gadd, the Toad assistants, and some of the ghosts, Polterpup is adopted by Luigi as a pet, and accompanies him back home.

Luigi's Mansion (Nintendo 3DS)[]

Polterpup only has a small role. If the player scans Luigi's amiibo, Polterpup appears whenever Luigi has lost all of his health, and he eats a Gold Bone to recover Luigi, just like in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon.

Luigi's Mansion 3[]

Polterpup returns to help Luigi on his quest, providing him with subtle hints on what to do, or how to beat a boss by barking at the object that you need to use. An example of this is during the fight with Johnny Deepend, he barks at the drainage area to help Luigi figure it out. The Gold Bone retains the same role as before.
