Polar Extreme is a Free-for-All minigame in Mario Party 9.
Opening[]
At first, the ship at the end is seen, then the view switches over to the characters.
Gameplay[]
The object is the reach the boat at the end. As the screen auto-scrolls to the right, the competitors must reach the ship or survive by jumping on breakable ice chunks that shift under their weight. The characters have to avoid the freezing water, because if a character falls into it, they are temporarily frozen, although the player can have their character return onto the ice platforms by pressing rapidly. Sometimes, jumping onto a larger chunk of ice causes it to shatter into smaller pieces. Penguins can be found on some chunks of ice as obstacles, briefly stunning whoever touches them, but a penguin can be stomped to flatten it for about one second. If a character either falls behind the scrolling screen or are in the freezing water for too long, they are eliminated. Whoever either reaches the boat at the end first or is the last character remaining is the winner.
