Poison Piranha Plants can be found in the Steam Gardens. To defeat the Poison Piranha Plants, Mario must start off by throwing Cappy at them. Although this causes the Poison Piranha Plant to swallow Cappy, preventing it from spitting poison, Mario can jump onto the Poison Piranha Plant to defeat it.
A Poison Piranha Plant is one of the enemies capturable by Cappy. Because Poison Piranha Plant swallows Cappy otherwise, Mario has to launch a rock at the Poison Piranha Plant, who then swallows it, during which Mario can throw Cappy at the Poison Piranha Plant. Upon being captured, the Poison Piranha Plant can spit the rock and poison balls to attack other enemies.
