Piranha Pods, also named Piranha Plant Eggs or Piranha Plant's Eggs, are an alternative to the usual Spiny Eggs that Lakitus throw. They resemble Spiny Eggs (complete with the spikes) but they also include a Piranha Plant mouth. They behave identically to a Spiny Egg upon being dunked onto the ground but they transform into Piranha Plants rather than hatching into Spinies upon landing, they also roll around less as well. Piranha Pods otherwise can be destroyed in the same ways as a Spiny Egg. Piranha Pods first appear in New Super Mario Bros. U.
In New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Luigi U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[]
Piranha Pods first appear in New Super Mario Bros. U and later appear in New Super Luigi U and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, in these games, they are used as weapons by Lakitu serving as an alternative to the usual Spiny Egg weapons they throw. Piranha Pods however are much more rare. They behave similarly to Spiny Eggs but they become Piranha Plants upon hitting the ground rather than Spinies, Piranha Pods also roll around less as well. Piranha Pods can be destroyed with the effects of a Fire Flower or Starman. They can also be frozen with the effects of an Ice Flower or Penguin Suit. Piranha Pods can be found in Blooming Lakitus, Spinning Sandstones, and Beanstalk Jungle.
In Mario Party Superstars[]
Piranha Pods (referred to as "strawberries") reappear in Mario Party Superstars. In this game, they can be found in Peach's Birthday Cake. Whenever players land on the Happening Spaces found throughout the board, Lakitu will show up and for five Coins, Lakitu will place a Piranha Pods in the icing by the Happening Space and a Piranha Plant will bloom from the icing below. Players that land by the Happening Spaces will lose Coins and the lost Coins will be given to the player that deployed the Piranha Plant. If a player is to land on a Happening Space after having placed a Piranha Plant there, he/she will be rewarded with 10 Coins and Lakitu will give the player the option to upgrade their Piranha Plant to a Super Piranha Plant for 30 Coins, if the player accepts, Lakitu will drop a Big Piranha Pod in the icing thus revealing a Super Piranha Plant, Super Piranha Plants are far more dangerous as they can actually steal Stars from rivals and give them to the placing player.

Trivia[]
- Despite the Piranha Pods possessing spikes, the Piranha Plants themselves that bloom don't possess any spikes.
