A Piranha Plant, sometimes distinctly named Potted Piranha Plant, is an item in which a regular Piranha Plant sits within a pot. It originally appeared in Mario Kart Arcade GP and its sequels as Princess Peach's special item. The Piranha Plant has also appeared in Super Mario 3D World and the Wii U version of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, followed by the mainline Mario Kart games with Mario Kart 8 and its remake Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Description[]

In Mario Kart Arcade GP, Mario Kart Arcade GP 2, and Mario Kart Arcade GP DX, using Piranha Plant eats the items of Princess Peach's opponents.

In Super Mario 3D World, while the player's character carries a Piranha Plant, it automatically lunges itself at enemies along the way to eat them. It can also stretch itself out to nearby Green Stars, including some that would otherwise be out of reach. A Piranha Plant can be defeated like a regular enemy by jumping on it. In multiplayer mode, if a Piranha Plant lunges itself at another player's character, it merely knocks them aside instead of powering them down.

In Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, a Piranha Plant lunges itself at nearby racers, a behavior derived from its appearance in Super Mario 3D World, as the user drives along. As with other items, the effect of a Piranha Plant is only temporary, so it disappears after a while.

In the games[]

In Super Mario 3D World, the potted Piranha Plant first appears in Shadow-Play Alley, being one of the signature features of the level. It also appears in this level in the Wii U version of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker.
