Pep is a common enemy in the Energy Hold in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey. They can fuse themselves into other enemies to upgrade their abilities. Peps make their home in the Energy Hold.

Variants[]

Peps come in three types: power (POW), Speed (SPEED), and defense (DEF). Their colour matches the appropriate stat: POW Peps are red, SPEED Peps are blue, and DEF Peps are green.

POW Peps have muscular arms coming from their sides, and they try to attack by punching Mario and Luigi, and either brother can counter the attack using their hammer. Mario and Luigi have to time their swings such that the Peps do not have their arms raised. If their arms are raised, the Peps block the swing. Otherwise, they take damage and retreat. They upgrade an enemy's power.

SPEED Peps have shark fins coming from the top of their body and the bottom, and they attack by trying to dash into Mario and Luigi, and and either brother can counter the attack with a jump provided the Peps do not attack from a mid-air area (If that does happen, the Pep must be ducked, which can be done by idling.). They can attack from the centre by charging at one Bro. and launching a copy as a projectile at the other. They upgrade an enemy's speed.

DEF Peps hold a shield by their side, and they don't attack in any way. They upgrade an enemy's defense.

Stats[]

Peps are a Level 16 enemy with 105 hit points. Their Attack Power, Defense, and Speed stats are 46 (53 for the POW Pep), 48 (68 for the DEF Pep), and 51 (71 for the SPEED Pep), respectively. Defeating one gives 120 Experience and 40 Coins, with 7 in 200 kills for the POW and SPEED Peps and 1 in 25 kills for the DEF Pep netting a Syrup Jar. If the Pep is a DEF Pep, it has a 1 in 5 chance of dropping a DEF Mush Jam as a rare item; otherwise, it drops the No-touch Socks as the rare drop with a 3 in 10 chance. A Pep subjected to status effects has unaffected chances of getting hit.

Behind the Scenes[]

Peps most likely derive their name from "peptide" (which refers to an organic compound that consists of various numbers of amino acides whose amines are reacted with the carboxylic acid of the next to form an amide bond) and the word "pep," which can mean "energy" or "high spirits."

Nomenclature[]

In Japanese, Peps are called Enajī (written エナジー), derived from corrupting English "energy." Spanish gives names for their variants, but does not name them as a whole class of enemy: Ataquina for the POW-Pep (from a transliteration of "attack"), Defensina for the DEF-Pep (from defensa ("defense")), and Velocina for the SPEED-Pep (from veloz ("fast")), all having the diminutive suffix -ina, presumably as a pun on medicina ("medicine"). French has a similar anomaly, lacking names for Peps as a whole but giving names for each of their variants using the -ine suffix from médicine ("medicine"): POW-Peps are called Attaquine (calque of their Spanish name), Defense Peps are called Défensine (calque of their Spanish name, from défense ("defense," "protection")), and Speed Peps are called Vitessine (from vitesse ("speed" without direction; not to be confused with vélocité, which also implies direction)). In Italia, their name is Enérgia, literally "energy," and their POW, DEF, and SPEED variants have the respective suffices ATT (short for Attacco (borrowing of English "attack")), DIF (short for Difesa ("defense")), and VEL (short for velocità ("speed," "velocity")). In German, they are called Amin, from English "amine" (which refers to a functional group of compounds derived from ammonia by replacing at least one hydrogen atom with hydrocarbon or other radicals), and their POW, DEF, and SPEED variants have the prefices ANGR. (from Angriff ("attack")), VERT. (from Verteidigung ("defense")), and GES. (from Geschwindigkeit ("speed")).
