Wario Land

Owls are a friendly species in the Wario Land series. They first appear in Wario Land II and return in Wario Land 3.

Profile[]

Behavior[]

They carry Wario around if he grabs their feet. The player can freely change the flight direction by pressing +Control Pad.

In Wario Land II, owls always start off sleeping while perched on the surface. When Wario bumps into an owl, it takes flight, and he can grab an owl's feet to have it fly him in the air. The owl moves in whichever direction is pressed on the +Control Pad, and they continue to move in said direction. If the player presses the +Control Pad button that corresponds to the direction that the owl is traveling, the owl moves faster. If Wario flies into a surface, the owl begins to move in the opposite direction, but if Wario gets hit by an obstacle or an enemy, the owl escapes, leaving Wario to fall. When Wario lets go of an owl, it returns to its original location.

In Wario Land 3, owls have a number of differences than in Wario Land II. They act differently depending on the time of day. During daytime, owls perch on the surface to sleep and wake up if Wario bumps into it, just like in Wario Land II. During the nighttime, owls fly back and forth in the air by itself by default, and they are not asleep, just as how real-world owls are nocturnal. Owls fly faster than in Wario Land II, including when the player presses a +Control Pad button corresponding to the direction that the owl travels in.

Wario Land II[]

Owls are encountered in a few stories, two of which feature their name in the title. Owls first appear in Get to Maze Woods, followed by Through the thorny maze!!, Get to the Castle!!, Hold on to the owl, and lastly Don't shock the owl!.

Even while flying on an owl, Wario is affected by obstacles, although the owl is not. The player can press B Button to have Wario let go of the owl, and during this, Wario becomes temporarily invincible. If Wario releases the owl too close to its starting position, Wario must either exit then re-enter the room, or travel back farther and then return to where the owl was for it to show up again.

An Owl on an Action Help demo in Wario Land 3

Owls return as allies, and they are found in three levels, The Steep Canyon, Castle of Illusions, and The Colossal Hole. They are one of two species that are affected by the time of day, the other one being Spearheads.

Aside from having their behavior changed, owls have some more differences from Wario Land II. When Wario grabs an owl, a different theme plays, in the same manner as triggering one of his reactions. After Wario releases the owl with B Button, he does not become temporarily invincible until he lands onto the ground, making it possible for him to take damage while falling in this manner. If he does, an owl escapes from Wario's hand as if it had not been released prior. Even if Wario is holding onto an owl, another owl can be found in the location where Wario found the owl he is holding onto.

In the Action Help menu, a tutorial of Wario grabbing an owl can be displayed if he is currently grabbing one, even if Wario releases an owl but has not touched the surface yet.
