O/X Blocks are blocks that appear in the 1-Up Rooms of Super Mario World. When a Prize Block in one of the rows of Prize Blocks in the 1-Up Room is struck, the block turns either into a block with an O on it or into a Brown Block. If an O/X Block turns into a Brown Block when struck, all remaining Prize Blocks in the row will do the same. The order of the blocks that must be struck to reveal an O/X Block is randomized, determined when the Prize Block is hit.[1] Upon the player successfully revealing the first one or two O/X Blocks, each block releases a coin. If a full row of O/X Blocks is successfully revealed, the last one struck in that row releases a 1-Up Mushroom.
While the order is random, a glitch allows the player to successfully execute a perfect score: If the player spin-jumps into the blocks while in Caped form, the Prize Blocks will always turn into O Blocks. However, the row of blocks must be hit in order from left to right.[2] This method does not work in the Game Boy Advance remake, Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2.
