The Nintendo DSi was announced by Nintendo on October 2, 2008. It is thinner and lighter than the DS Lite, having removed the Game Boy Advance slot. Two cameras, one on the outside and one on the inside, was added, as well as music playback functions, larger screens, a SD Card slot, and the DSiWare shop, an online shop much like the Wii Shop Channel, where original games can be bought.

Release Dates

  • Japan: November 1, 2008
  • North America: April 5, 2009
  • Europe: April 3, 2009

Features

The Nintendo DSi's main features consist of the Nintendo published DSi Camera and Sound Editing functions. The DSi also comes with and online store similar to the WIi Shop Channel as well as PictoChat and DS Download Play from the previous installment.

DSi Camera

The DSi Camera allows players to take and edit photos using a series of twelve different lenses. The lenses vary from distorting photographs to merging two faces together. The camera software can store up to 412 photos. Any additional photos can be stored in an SD card.

Nintendo DSi XL

Nintendo has recently released a larger version of the Nintendo DSi, called the Nintendo DSi XL. Its most notable improvements are larger screens, better view angles, longer battery life, and a shiny surface with a matte underside for better gripping. It was announced in 2010 in North America.

Games

While no DSi specific game cards have been released, several games and applications (called DSiWare) can be bought off of the DSi's online store using purchased points, in a manner very similar to the Wii Points.
