Nabbit is a character who first appears in New Super Mario Bros. U.

Profile[]

Physical description[]

Nabbit is a purple rabbit who has round eyes, long ears, and black limbs. He wears a white handkerchief very similar to Bowser Jr.'s, as it also depicts a drawing of a large mouth with sharpened teeth. Nabbit's other clothing items include white gloves and orange shoes.

Behavior[]

Nabbit is a thief who frequently steals items, and after stealing them, Nabbit runs away with them in his bag. In this regard, Nabbit is an antagonist, although he has paired up with the playable characters on various occasions.

In Super Mario series[]

Nabbit steals from various Toad Houses. After completing Stone-Eye Zone, there is an event where Nabbit is seen fleeing from a Toad House, and the Toad requests the playable characters to catch him. Aside from this instance, Nabbit is encountered several times throughout different levels, where the playable characters have 100 seconds to catch him. If Nabbit is caught, Toad awards the playable characters with a P-Acorn. If the characters fail to catch Nabbit three times, he flees and disappears until the criteria is met.

While chasing Nabbit, the playable characters can also toss projectiles at Nabbit, such as Koopa Shells, fireballs if they are in their Fire form, or Ice Balls if they are in their Ice form. A character can also slide into Nabbit or have a Yoshi put Nabbit into his mouth. Multiplayer mode also features an exclusive method where Nabbit can be slowed on the Wii U GamePad using Boost Mode.

Nabbit appears in seven levels, each in a different world: Acorn Plains Way of Acorn Plains; Blooming Lakitus of Layer-Cake Desert; Urchin Shoals of Sparkling Waters; Prickly Goombas! of Frosted Glacier; Jungle of the Giants of Soda Jungle; Walking Piranha Plants! of Rock-Candy Mines, and Seesaw Shrooms of Meringue Clouds. Peach's Castle and Superstar Road are the only two worlds where Nabbit does not appear. Even after being caught in a world's level, Nabbit still appears in the same level after playing three levels.

New Super Luigi U[]

Nabbit makes his first playable appearance, replacing Mario from New Super Mario Bros. U. Nabbit is an ideal choice for beginners, especially because he is mostly invincible except to falling either down a pit, into lava, or Poisoned Water, being crushed by certain objects, being eaten by a Cheep Chomp, exposure to volcanic ash, or the time limit running out. Stronger enemies and bosses can knock back Nabbit, but this does not damage Nabbit.

A few disadvantages to using Nabbit is that he cannot use any power-up items, nor can he hold any object or ride a Yoshi. While he cannot use any power-ups, it is a good idea to collect them because at the end of every level, each power-up you collected will transform into a 1-up that will be stored.

In single-player, Nabbit can be played in a level by holding Classic Controller ZL Button on the GamePad or the Pro Controller or holding the B Button on the Wii Remote while entering any level, except Flying Squirrel Ovation in favor of a Mii being playable there.

Despite being an ally of Luigi, Nabbit still comes and steals the item from a chest if the player waits too long for their character to collect it. If the player is playing as Nabbit, the screen fades after taking too long instead. In single-player, Nabbit can still be chased in one of seven levels—Waddlewing Warning!, Spinning Sandstones, The Great Geysers, Fire and Ice, Giant Swing-Along, Rising Piranhas, and Wiggler Rodeo—each being a variation of their respective level in New Super Mario Bros. U.

Super Mario Maker[]

Since the version 1.4.0 updates, Nabbit has been featured in the form of an unlockable Mystery Mushroom costume. It is randomly unlocked by clearing the 100 Mario Challenge on either Normal or a higher difficulty after a certain number of attempts.

Like other costumes, Nabbit's was given some distinct sound effects. His power-up, death, and victory jingles are all reused from New Super Mario Bros. U. He was given a distinct jumping sound consisting of a short squeaky noise. If the player presses +Control Pad up on the Wii U GamePad, Nabbit faces the camera and laughs.

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[]

Nabbit reappears as a playable character, retaining his abilities from New Super Luigi U, but he was still given some differences. Nabbit can now hold objects and Baby Yoshis and is also playable in the New Super Mario Bros. U levels for the first time. While he now can bounce onto Yoshis, Nabbit still cannot ride them. Like with Toadette, who was added in the game as a playable character, Nabbit can swim in a similar manner to characters in their Penguin form, he does not slip on ice, and 100 extra seconds are added to the level timer. On the character select screens, Nabbit is labeled as "Easiest" ("Very Easy" in PAL releases). Additionally, any level completed in single-player as Nabbit is marked as purple.

Nabbit still retains his role of stealing items from Toad Houses, unless he is being played as.

In the ending scene, after Bowser and Bowser Jr. have been defeated, Nabbit watches the others come to Princess Peach and leaves.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder[]

Nabbit returns as a playable character, retaining his invincibility status, this time sharing it with the Yoshis. Unlike past games (and probably because Yoshi is now a playable character), Nabbit can ride a Yoshi in multiplayer.

In Mario Golf series[]

Mario Golf: World Tour[]

This is Nabbit's first spin-off and handheld appearance. He is exclusively available as downloadable content, obtained by purchasing the Flower Pack, either individually or via the Season Pass.

Nabbit's normal driving distance is 213 yards, and his Star Drive distance is 274 yards. Nabbit's shot trajectory has a huge draw that travels at the lowest height out every character, making his shots harder to fly over obstacles. Nabbit's shots are the least affected by wind compared to the other characters.

Like the other characters, Nabbit has unique animations for when getting the golf ball into the hole: if Nabbit gets a Par, he swings his bag; if he gets a Birdie, he runs around the place; if Nabbit gets a Eagle or better, he goes onto a New Super Mario Bros. U level and flies in the air; however, if Nabbit gets a Bogey, he hides in his bag, and if Nabbit gets even lower than a Bogey, this is followed by a Piranha Plant eating him as he hides into his bag.

There is a Nabbit Mii costume that can be unlocked by completing a costume challenge at Bowser's Castle.

Mario Golf: Super Rush[]

Nabbit does not return, although he is one of the names mentioned on the scoreboard.

In Mario Party series[]

Mario Party 10[]

If Team Mario lands on a Bowser Block -1 Space, Nabbit comes take a Dice Block away from Bowser. Nabbit also appears in the credits if the dice lands on a Bowser mark.

Super Mario Party[]

Nabbit makes a cameo in the minigame Absent Minded in the form of character artwork, and he can be selected as one of the guesses.

In Mario & Luigi series[]

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam[]

Nabbit makes a reappearance. Here, he steals a bunch of Bros. Attacks from some Toads at Princess Peach's Castle near the beginning of the game. The only two he didn't get away with are the 3D Red Shell and the Fire Flower.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey[]

In the Bowser Jr.'s Journey campaign, Nabbit is a recruitable ally in the level The Best Beast. When Bowser Jr. first encounters Nabbit, Bowser Jr. tells him that he wants him on his side. The only way to recruit Nabbit is by using Ludwig's Negotiate Captain Command.

In Mario Kart Tour[]

Available since July 15, Nabbit is a high-end driver with his special item, the Lucky Seven. He was added alongside the Wild West Tour.

Crossover appearances[]

Super Smash Bros. series[]

Nabbit in SSB for Wii U

Nabbit in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

Nabbit appears in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a hazard on the Mushroom Kingdom U stage. Nabbit will attempt to trap players in his bag and fly off with them resulting in a KO. Nabbit can be knocked back in order to prevent this and fighters not caught in his bag can still hit Nabbit to "save" the caught player, and he tends to appear after the scene changes.

Nabbit also appears to keep with the theme of the event match "Enough with the Kidnapping" in the Mushroom Kingdom U stage where Princess Peach having 2 stocks has to defeat Bowser and his son and both have a stock each. During this match a Boss Galaga with modified behavior appears and will both only target Peach and only affect Peach ignoring the Koopas if they make contact with it's beam and otherwise affecting Peach the same as in beaming her up to it's clutches to take her away and "kidnap" her if she can't get free, and it will infinitely respawn so long as the battle continues to target Peach. Nabbit appears with more regularity in the transitions than regularly to help keep with the kidnapping theme though his behavior isn't modified and while he can affect Princess Peach as usual and "kidnap" her he could also do the same to Bowser and his son. Peach and the Koopas can still hit Nabbit as usual and knock him off stage.

Mario & Sonic series[]

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (Nintendo 3DS)[]

Nabbit is a guest playable character exclusively playable in the 100m and 100m Plus events. Nabbit's special action involves him speeding up and leaving a cloud of dust behind him. This is Nabbit's first game with dialogue, although he speaks in short, simple sentences.

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (Wii U)[]

Nabbit is exclusively playable in the 100m event, similarly to the Nintendo 3DS version.

Behind the scenes[]

Etymology[]

Nabbit's name is a portmanteau of "Rabbit," his apparent species, and "nab," which means to take something, referring to his tendency to steal item.

Trivia[]

  • Nabbit's bandana bears a resemblance to the one Bowser Jr. has.
  • In a challenge in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, he battles against the Mario Bros. and Paper Mario, and teams up with them when Bowser's minions face him. This proves that Nabbit is not Bowser's minion.
