A Mystery, also referred to as Mystery?, is an item in the Paper Mario series.


Paper Mario


In Paper Mario, the item Mystery is found in Boo's Mansion. The shopkeeper of the Boo's Shop will sell this item for only 1 coin. This item is actually quite the mystery. This item cannot be used outside of battle, and when it is used in battle can be one of six different items. These items are Mushroom, Super Shroom, Dizzy Dial, Stone Cap, Thunder Rage, or Pebble. The Pebble is the only item that doesn't do its actual effect. Instead, it damages Mario instead of a selected enemy. A mystery is found in Bowser's Castle, near the beginning.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, a Mystery can be found at a two shops in the game. This item is purchased at the Sales Stall on the Excess Express and Pungent's Shop of The Great Tree. These shop sells Mystery for 3 coins. The item in this game can be one of many different items featured in the game. Some of these items include: Mushroom, Super Shroom, Ultra Shroom, Jammin' Jelly, Volt Shroom, Thunder Rage, Earth Quake, Shooting Star, et cetera.

Super Paper Mario

In Super Paper Mario, Mysteries can have a variety of various effects. These effects can be similar to most of the past games' Mystery. Some new items have been added to the list of items this item can be. This item, in this game, can be a Catch Card, Ice Storm, or even a Tasty Tonic. This item is found in Flipside Arcade, the arcade sells this item for 5 tokens.


  • In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, this item can make any recipe in the game (at random), when it is cooked with a Point Swap.
  • In Super Paper Mario, this item is actually called "Mystery Box."
  • This is the only item in Super Paper Mario that makes the Miracle Dinner. However, this item can make a lot of different items when cooked by itself making Miracle Dinner difficult to obtain.
