Super Mario

Mysterious Mountainside is the fourth mission of Tall, Tall Mountain in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS.

Layout[]

There are no changes to the layout of Tall, Tall Mountain.

Objective[]

Mario (or Yoshi, Luigi, or Wario in the remake) have to travel to the bottom of a slide hidden within the mountain and collect the Power Star at the end.

The player must climb the mountain (or use Hoot) and get to where the Fwoosh is. There is a part of the stone wall where the coins are. The player can jump into it and they will enter a slide course. The player must ride the slide towards the end without falling off. This slide is very difficult due to the narrow turns and elevated portions of the slide, making it difficult to control and land properly when making certain jumps.

In the original, the slide could be skipped by falling down to where the niche is and obtaining the Star. In Super Mario 64 DS, the niche is enclosed by a mesh cage preventing this. However, Luigi can get a Power Flower and use his vanish ability to turn invisible and somersault to the cage and pass through it.

There are invisible walls and checkpoints to prevent characters from bypassing huge sections of the slide, resulting in a life being lost, even if the player is actually above a portion of the slide. However, in the DS version, by using Luigi and performing a Backward Somersault on the right part of the platform just before the slide begins, it is possible to bypass the entirety of the slide without losing a life, by guiding Luigi towards the end of the slide via the map. In order to do this however, the player must get towards a certain angle while in the air, and not go too far out to cross any invisible walls or checkpoints, otherwise Luigi can end up losing a life. Compared to riding the slide normally over using Luigi's Backward Somersault to bypass the whole slide, the latter method actually takes around an extra minute longer compared to the time it takes using the former method.
