Mushroom Zone is the first overall level in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. It is meant to help familiarize new players to the game's controls and mechanics before starting the main journey. Once Mario completes the level, it cannot be revisited, being the only regular level with this status.
Layout[]
The level starts on flat ground. As Mario continues forward, there are two ? Blocks, each containing a coin, and a small gap is between both ? Blocks. After these blocks is a Goomba, followed by a Koopa Troopa walking over two Brick Blocks in midair. Right after this are two more ? Blocks, and the left one contains a Super Mushrooms. After this, Mario has to jump across two small, square-shaped hills, in the middle of which is a very small gap with flat ground at the same height as the starting area. To the right of the second hill is a slightly wider stretch of land, still at the same height. The following ground becomes very slightly heightened, and a Goomba can be found at the start of the heightened point.
After the Goomba is a Warp Pipe that Mario can optionally go down to enter an underground area consisting only of 24 coins hovering in midair, each grouped in columns of three. The Warp Pipe on the ceiling of the underground area takes Mario back up to the main level, also showing that the exit Warp Pipe is placed near the entrance one. If the shortcut route is not taken, it is shown that afer the first Warp Pipe, the ground is slightly lowered to its initial height again, and continuing onward shows seven Brick Blocks hovering in midair, joined and a Koopa Troopa walking across five ? Blocks, also joined together, that hover above the Brick Blocks. To the right is the exit Warp Pipe for the shortcut area.
After the two Warp Pipes, the ground is slightly heightened again, leading up to a slightly widened stretch of land, where the first and only Paragoomba is encountered. After this, the ground slightly lowers back to the same height as the starting area. At the very start of this are two Empty Blocks hovering slightly above, almost at the same height as the stretch of land where the first Paragoomba is encountered. If Mario runs fast enough and jumps from the two Empty Blocks, he can collect a row of three coins hovering in midair. After this are the first two Piranha Plants, each in their own pipe, and to the right of each Piranha Plant, the ground briefly slopes upward.
Following the two slopes, the ground returns to its initial height, which it remains at for a while. Right after the second slope is a row of six blocks in midair, with two ? Blocks in the center and two Brick Blocks to the left and right each. The ? Blocks contain a 1-Up Heart and Starman respectively. After the blocks are a pair of three Goombas, and right around the third Goomba is a row of three Empty Blocks, and above them is a fourth Empty Block, where the Mid-Point Bell hangs as a checkpoint.
After the Mid-Point Bell, Mario comes across a row of ten ? Blocks, where two Koopa Troopas walk on top of, and hovering above them are eight coins. The penultimate ? Block contains a Fire Flower, if Mario is in his Super form, or a Super Mushroom if he is in his Small form. After this, the ground briefly slopes twice, and six Brick Blocks cover the gap between the two slopes. If Mario is in either his Super or Fire form, he can break the Brick Blocks by performing a Spin Jump onto them and obtain a 1-Up Heart in the ditch below.
Following the ditch, the ground returns to its initial height again, and Mario encounters another Goomba, followed by another Piranha Plant. A row of four Empty Blocks and four Fiery blocks are stacked on the ground on each side of the Warp Pipe. In midair, above the blocks and pipe, are ten coins that can be collected. Unlike the first two Piranha Plants, Mario can enter the third one's pipe to go down to an underground area, which is even smaller than the first one. The underground area consists only of 24 more coins, twelve located around the left and right sides of the Warp Pipe, each grouped into columns of four. Mario can jump up at the Warp Pipe to exit back up to the main level.
After the third Piranha Plant, the ground forms into an upward set of stairs and then a downwards set of stairs. A Goomba is encountered on top of the first stair-like ground formation, while a Koopa Troopa is found on top of the second one. A short gap is placed between both stair formations, and it consists of four spikes. Two coins hover above the gap that have the spikes below.
At the end, the ground continues straightforward to the Goal. Alternatively, Mario can jump from four Brick Blocks positioned in midair, the first three of which are placed diagonally from each other, while the fourth is to the right of the third one. Mario can use these platforms to jump up at the Bonus Bell, allowing him to play a bonus game after completing the level.
