- This article is about Mushrooms in general. For other subjects of the same name, see Mushroom (disambiguation).
- Not to be confused with Super Mushroom or Dash Mushroom.
Mushrooms are a recurring item in the Mario franchise. The most common type of Mushrooms are Super Mushrooms, a power-up turning Mario or another character into their Super form. While Super Mushrooms debuted in Super Mario Bros., regular Mushrooms first appear in Yoshi's Cookie. Mushrooms often have the same appearance as Super Mushrooms and Dash Mushrooms, having a pair of eyes on their stalk and a red cap with white spots. As such, differentiation between the three, let alone any Mushroom lookalike, can be difficult, especially in instances when they all have the same name. In such cases, these Mushrooms are mainly differentiated from any difference in functionality or purpose.
Mushrooms in general serve as a symbol representing the Mario franchise, such as in the Super Smash Bros. series.
In Yoshi's Cookie[]
In all versions of Yoshi's Cookie, Mushrooms replace one of the cookies upon reaching round 10.
In Mario Clash[]
The Mushroom initiates Fever Time, during which Mario has the ability to defeat any enemy from a single hit. The effect wears off if Mario makes a mistake or once the stage has been cleared.
In Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars[]
Aside from being a type of healing item, there are Mushrooms in the Moleville Mountain minigame, in which touching one gives the Mine Cart a speed boost, being functionally similar to Dash Mushrooms from the Mario Kart series. These Mushrooms bear the closest resemblance to their standard design compared to other Mushrooms.
The Forest Maze features Mushrooms with an entirely different appearance. Most of them restore health like Mushrooms that can be bought from stores, although some are instead given to Mushroom Boy in exchange for items.
