Mush Pit is a 4-Player minigame in Mario Party 3 (where it is known as Toadstool Titan), Mario Party: The Top 100, and Mario Party Superstars.

Layout[]

The Mario Party 3 version takes place within a square room with a green floor. The floor has a giant red outlined Mushroom design. surrounded by a red circle, and with four red lines leading to the room's four corners. The outer portion of each of the room's walls is made of red bricks, but the inner portion of those walls consists of smaller blue and white bricks that together evoke the sky and clouds. Each inner portion of a wall has three stands shaped and colored like Warp Pipes placed in front of it, each of a different height.

In Mario Party: The Top 100 and Mario Party Superstars, the floor is brown and has a giant brown outlined Mega Mushroom design. The circle around the design is larger and overlaps with the edges of the room, and there are no additional lines. There is no longer an inner and outer portion of the walls, with the new walls being completely designed after the old walls inner portion. Instead of blue and white bricks, The walls consist of blue blocks in various shapes matching those found in children's playsets, and there are clouds painted onto the walls. Instead of having stands shaped and colored like Warp Pipes, Warp Pipe shapes are formed out of two blocks of the same material the walls are made of, and they jut out from the wall instead of being in front of the wall. There are only two of these Warp Pipe formations: one on the left wall and one on the right wall. In front of the walls, there are models of bushes and flowers made from the same materials as the walls.

In Mario Party Superstars, the bush and flower models are popped upward when an enlarged player collides with a wall, in addition to the screen shaking.

Opening[]

The four players fall from the ceiling into the room, with each player landing near a corner of the room. Nine Brick Blocks appear in the room from a puff of smoke, floating above the ground. The minigame then starts.

Gameplay[]

The minigame is divided into two objectives. First, the characters compete to collect a Mushroom from floating Brick Blocks, which temporarily enlarges a character. In this state, the character who got the mushroom chases after the other players, eliminating them on contact. The other players have to avoid the enlarged player. Once the mushroom's effect ends, more Brick Blocks appear, with a new mushroom inside. This procedure loops until only one player remains or until time runs out, whichever comes first.

To collect a mushroom, the characters have to jump at one of the Brick Blocks that it is hiding within. When this is done to the Brick Block with the Mushroom, the Brick Block does not break and the Mushroom rises slowly out of the block. When the Mushroom finishes rising, it starts moving around the room, and all remaining Brick Blocks vanish, including the Brick Block the Mushroom came out of. Players can slow other players down by jumping on each other, Ground Pounding each other, and punching each other.

When a character collects a Mushroom, it splits into five stars, which converge on the player who collected the Mushroom, causing them to grow to massive size within about two seconds. While enlarged, instead of moving normally, the player selects a direction for them to move in and the character runs in that direction until they hit a wall. When the large player hits a wall, they briefly stagger and cannot move again until the stagger ends. Additionally, the screen shakes. Any normal player hit by the large player while they are running is eliminated from the minigame by being launched up and out of the room. The enlarged state, and therefore this state of the minigame, is only temporary. Once it ends, the large player shrinks down to normal and nine new Brick Blocks appear. The minigame returns to the first state, with the Mushroom hidden in a different block than it was in the prior time. While the minigame is in the second state, "Mushroom Power-Up" replaces the normal music.

This minigame has a time limit of 60 seconds, shared across both of its states. If the giant player eliminates their last opponent, they return to normal and win. If the timer runs out and there two or more players remaining, it is a draw.

Mario Party: The Top 100 and Mario Party Superstars make several changes to the minigame. The Mushoom is replaced by a Mega Mushroom. When the Brick Block containing the Mega Mushroom is hit, it turns into an Empty Block as it releases the Mega Mushroom before vanishing along with any remaining Brick Blocks. The Mega Mushroom comes out of the block instantly instead of rising out of the block. The Mega Mushroom does not split into stars after being obtained, instead immediately making the user grow. This makes the process of the minigame transitioning into the second state less than half as long to occur than it did in Mario Party 3. Players who grow are briefly surrounded by star effects of varying colors. While the minigame is in the second state, "Mega Mushroom" plays instead of "Mushroom Power-Up". It is no longer a draw if the timer runs out and there two or more players remaining.
