The Motley Bossblob is an antagonist who serves as a recurring boss in Super Mario 3D World and its enhanced Ninento Switch port Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury.

Description[]

Motley Bossblob is a jester who emits gelatinous blobs to transform into a large robotic clown-like monster. His name is derived from the word "motley" which refers to an assortment, referring to the many blobs that make up his clown form, but it also refers to a jester's costume, which he wears.

In Super Mario 3D World[]

Motley

Motley's base appearance

Motley Bossblob serves as the third/final boss of World 6 where he is fought in Motley Bossblob's Big Battle. He is the main boss of that area and is overall the ninth boss of Super Mario 3D World and its Enhanced Port on the Nintendo Switch

In this boss-only course, Motley Bossblob gathers large gelatinous blobs to transform himself into a large clown-like monster. He will then try to jump on the player. On the last jump, Motley will split into many smaller blobs along with his jester form, where he will be vulnerable to attack. The player must defeat him by attacking the fleeing jester when he is defenseless, while avoiding the blobs that hurt the player. The player can also attack or step on the smaller blobs to make his clown monster form smaller when they combine. The more blobs that get attacked, the smaller he gets. Every time the boss splits, a set of Double Cherries will appear. After three hits, Motley Bossblob is defeated and the Warp Pipe to the Goal Pole is revealed.

Motley Bossblob is later fought again in World Bowser as the level Motley Bossblob's Encore, which is one of the two main boss levels that must be completed in order to progress to the final boss level. Is either the second/third-to-last or third/penultimate boss of that world and is overall either the fourteenth/third-to-last or fifteenth/penultimate boss of Super Mario 3D World. And also appears in Boss Blitz as the sixth/final boss of that stage with a similar strategy. His jumps will now create shockwaves which can damage the player.

Attacks[]

  • Blob Clown Formation: Motley will use his wand to form many blobs with him forming a giant clown monster made of blob.
  • High Jumping: After being fused with the blobs, Motley will start jumping trying to crush the player. after many jumps he will try to ground-pound the player however if the player dodge the attack the blob clown will dissipate and Motley will return to his normal form and start running.
    • Shock Waves: During the second and third battles, Motley can also created shock waves a pond landing on the ground after jumping.

Trivia[]

  • Moltey Bossblob shares many similarities to Hisstocrat, they both serves as the main boss of a circus-themed stage, both have a reptile-like design, both have a form of Power-Up that can be used in their respective battles and both have a form of minions that aids them, tho in terms of the esthetics and battle strategies, they both have many opposite traits, while Hisstocrat is a gargantuan limbless/serpent-themed monster with one form and fights while stationary, Moltey Bossblob however is a tiny humanoid monster with two forms and fights while moving around. Plus while Motley Bossblob returns later on in the game in a more stronger form, Hisstocrat does not, and is instead, replace by a similar looking but more stronger form of Hisstocrat.
  • Motley Bossblob's based form bares a slight resemblents to a Koopaling, particularly Lemmy Koopa.
