"MORTON GIVE FOOD. EAT! EAT NOW!"
—Morton, Bowser Jr.'s Journey

Morton Koopa Jr., or simply just Morton, is one of the older Koopalings (Bowser's offspring in older games) in the Mario games. He first appeared in Super Mario Bros. 3. He possesses similar abilities are similar to Roy Koopa. For a while, Morton, like the other Koopalings, have not made many appearances up until New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and has even gone on to become a playable character in Mario spinoffs and the Super Smash Bros. series.

Profile[]

Physical description[]

Morton has a pale-gray head with black hairs on it. Another unique trait of Morton is his gray (sometimes brown) skin and having a light belly instead of light yellow one. Morton has four spiked teeth, two on the left and right sides each, two wristbands, and a gray shell with spikes surrounded by white rings. He also has a four-ribbed padded stomach and padded feet.

In the Super Mario World cartoon, Big Mouth (as he is named in the show) is a lot shorter and thinner, his eyes are much much larger, and he has purple eyelids. Big Mouth also has has a purple shell instead of a gray one.

Personality[]

Morton can be described as being like a simple-minded oaf. Morton is known to be very angry and prone to temper tantrums. He has an inflated opinion of himself and likes to think that he is right about everything, though he is usually wrong and also he incredibly talkative. He has a strong relationship with his brother Roy.

Powers and abilities[]

Morton often makes use of his physical strength and muscular build:

  • Heavy Weight Jump: Morton can jump and pound the ground with great force due to his weight.
  • Magic Wand: Like many other Koopalings, Morton can use his wand to create pink magic blasts. However, in New Super Mario Bros. 2, he instead creates spike balls.
  • Hammer Blast: Morton will summon a Pokey and use his hammer to strike Pokey's segments in New Super Mario Bros. U.
  • Hammer Blitz: With two segments of a Pokey left, Morton will strike them faster making them hard to dodge.

In the Super Mario series[]

Super Mario Bros. 3[]

In Super Mario Bros. 3, Morton is the second boss, and he is encountered on the airship of Desert Land. Like the other Koopalings, Morton can jump around and shoot magic blasts from his wand. To defeat Morton, Mario or Luigi has to jump on his head three times or, in their Fire form, shoot ten fireballs at Morton.

Super Mario World[]

In Super Mario World, Morton returns as the second boss, and he is fought in the castle at the end of Donut Plains. His attack involves him running up the wall and ceiling, attempting to drop onto Mario or Luigi if they are below. If Morton lands on Mario or Luigi, they take damage, and if he lands onto the floor next to them, the area shakes, briefly stunning Mario or Luigi. Just as in Super Mario Bros. 3, it takes two hits to defeat Morton.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[]

Morton in New Super Mario Bros. Wii

After a long hiatus, Morton, like the other Koopalings, return as bosses in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. He is first seen among the other Koopalings in the opening, disguised as a cake to trick Princess Peach. As a boss, Morton is fought as the boss of World 6, both in its fortress and castle.

New Super Mario Bros. 2[]

In New Super Mario Bros. 2, Morton is the fourth boss, and he is fought in the castle at the end of World 4.

New Super Mario Bros. U[]

In New Super Mario Bros. U, like in Super Mario Bros. 3, Morton is the boss of a desert world, specifically Layer-Cake Desert, and is the second Koopaling boss. He is faced at the end of Morton's Compactor Castle.

In Yoshi's Safari[]

In Yoshi's Safari, Morton is the boss of the fifth stage, Spirit Mountain.

In Hotel Mario[]

In Hotel Mario, Morton is the first boss, and he is encountered in his hotel Morton's Wood Door Hysteria Hotel. It takes two hits to defeat Morton.

In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga[]

In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Morton and his siblings are faced as bosses in separate areas of Bowser's Castle, and they had been brainwashed by Bowletta prior. Morton in particular is the second boss fought.

Appearances in other media[]

Bigmouth Koopa Jr.

In the cartoons he was named Big Mouth Koopa, ostensibly because he was more talk than action, and as an homage to Downey, whose entire theme was his admittedly big mouth. His show’s logo was a large open mouth, which Morton/Big Mouth Koopa’s design even resembled. Aptly, in the Super Mario World cartoon, he occasionally served as an announcer[1] (Until an annoyed sibling or Koopa would stop him when he talked way too much). There are a few physical differences between Morton and Big Mouth: Morton’s shell is gray (or black in New Super Mario Bros. Wii) and Big Mouth’s is purple; Big Mouth has much larger eyes and purple eyelids; and the star-shaped birthmark (a possible reference to Paul Stanley from the band KISS) on Morton’s face is darker around the cheek, while it’s just one solid color on Big Mouth. Morton Jr. is also much larger than Big Mouth. In the Super Mario World cartoon, Big Mouth’s shell became the same color as in the artwork shown on the side.

Trivia[]

  • Morton is the only Koopaling to sport a gray shell. Wendy's shell is pink and Roy's formerly; Roy's is currently Purple and the others all have green shells (in the unused Super Princess Peach sprites Wendy was the only Koopaling without a green shell). Morton has a black shell in New Super Mario Bros. Wii.
  • Morton was named after American talk show host, Morton Downey Jr.. This name was chosen because Morton "looked like a loudmouth" much like Downey. [2] While this is his name origin, it does not provide an in-universe explanation for the Jr. part of his name.
  • Spewart, one of the Broodals from Super Mario Odyssey strongly resembles Morton Koopa Jr.
