A Moon Coin is an item similar to a Star Coin except they display a 3-Up Moon instead of a Starman. Moon Coins first appear in New Super Mario Bros. 2.

They are exclusively found in World Star. While Moon Coins serve the same gameplay purpose as Star Coins, they do not contribute to the Star Coins needed to open the different Toad Houses blocked by a Star Coin Sign. Regardless, Moon Coins are one of the requirements for acquiring a star ranking on a save file. Upon receiving every Moon Coin, every Toad House remains open permanently.
In Mario Golf: World Tour[]
Moon Coins reappear in Mario Golf: World Tour, in which they can be obtained by the player by achieve harder challenges than the Star Coin versions. In these challenges, the coins and rings are set in positions to be trickier, the challenge in match plays have to increase, the wind is tougher, and the tees are used.
