Monkey Mines (also known as Ruins)[1] is a mining excavated from ruins in a rocky hill on Donkey Kong Island that was the second location from Donkey Kong Country and the third location of Donkey Kong Country Returns.

Overview[]

Originally this hill contained only ancient temple ruins with several sculptures and a cave.[2] After the presence of the Kremling Krew, a part of this hill became a quarry with excavated mines.[3][4]

History[]

Background information[]

Despite the name, these mines form part of the Kremling Krew mining network all over the mountain in order to look for ore until they are abandoned.[5]

Donkey Kong series[]

In Donkey Kong Country, this mining was explored by DK & Diddy as the second stage of the journey to recover the Banana Hoard. Here the duo met Winky for the first time, rode the curves in a mine cart, watching out for the Rock Krocs, passed the Gnawties riding the millstones and had the battle against Master Necky to retrieve the second banana.

In Donkey Kong Country Returns named Ruins, the same ones near this mine were explored by DK & Diddy as the third stage of the journey to once again retrieve the bananas from the hoard. They had to activate various mechanisms in the temples, destroy the rest of the Snaps ships, go through creatures that live in these ruins, devastate stone barriers and had the third battle against Gong-Oh to free Stu from his control.

Levels[]

  • Winky's Walkway
  • Mine Cart Carnage
  • Bouncy Bonanza
  • Stop & Go Station
  • Millstone Mayhem
  • Boss Level: Necky's Nuts

Profiles[]

Donkey Kong Country[]

  • instruction booklet (page 23): The vast mines of Donkey Kong Country have been stripped of any ore they may have once contained. All the tools of the miners remain, however, from mine carts to rickety scaffolding. There are special barrels that turn the lights on and off, and risky mine elevators full of slag. Without a hard hat, mine exploration is not recommended, but Klump is not about to give up his!
  • Prima Official Game Guide (page 40): This sprawling system consists of mainly cave levels, finishing with a romp through a temple. All levels contain a Warp (the final series of levels to do so) and feature your first taste of a real challenge. You need pinpoint accuracy to complete the Mine Cart Carnage stage, quick and brave running to avoid the deadly RockKrocs in Stop & Go Station, and some cheeky leaping to dodge the Millstones of Millstone Mayhem. Finally, the differently colored versions of creatures you previously faced have the same attack pattern, but different timing.

Donkey Kong Country Returns[]

  • Prima's Official Strategy Guide (page 19): The Ruins is the island's third world. These levels take place in the ruins of ancient civilizations that have been hidden away in a jungle. While you face several of the same enemies as you did in the previous worlds, you also face stilts, Toothberries, and Acks. As you travel though these ruins, look for hidden areas and pound on containers to get items. If you see a vine hanging from a statue head, jump up and grab it to pull on it. This will always cause something interesting to happen.
