Mini Mushrooms are a recurring type of Mushroom in the Mario franchise. They first appear in Mario Party 4.
Description[]
Mini Mushrooms are items that shrink Mario or a different character to a very small size, generally enabling them to reach otherwise inaccessible small areas. Given that Mega Mushrooms also debuted in Mario Party 4, Mini Mushrooms were designed to have the opposite effect as them. A character in their Mini form can usually access small areas that they cannot otherwise do while normal-sized.
In their earlier appearances, Mini Mushrooms had the design of a pink mushroom, with four white dots (three are visible on the front), and they have a pink pacifier beneath their eyes. Like Mega Mushrooms, Mini Mushrooms had their design changed for New Super Mario Bros.. Mini Mushrooms in particular received a light blue cap while retaining their white spots, although they no longer have a pacifier.
In Mario Party 4[]
A Mini Mushroom is an item that both shrinks the character and reduces the Dice Block count to 1-5, eliminating the 6-10. In their Mini form, a character can enter Gates and play Mini Mini-Games. The effects of a Mini Mushroom wear off when a character's turn ends, upon which they return to regular size. A Mini Mushroom costs five Coins to purchase at the Item Shop. A character has a chance of obtaining a Mini Mushroom for free at a Mushroom Space when selecting either of the two boxes, with the other one containing a Mega Mushroom.
A Mini Mushroom has an alternate form named Super Mini Mushroom. It is a translucent pink color and has the same effect, but allows the player to use two Dice Blocks, both ranging from one to five.
In Mario Pinball Land[]
While under the effects of a Mini Mushroom, Mario can enter small passages to earn extra Power Stars. They normally cost ten coins to buy from Toad in his tent.
In New Super Mario Bros. series[]
New Super Mario Bros.[]
The Mini Mushroom is a power-up item that Mario or Luigi can use to become Mini. Collecting a Mini Mushroom earns the player 1,000 points.
The Mini Mushroom grants Mario or Luigi the ability to enter small pipes, similar to Mario Party 4, or very small openings in general. It also allows Mario or Luigi to perform higher jumps (as their gravitational pull is lessened), run across water, and stand on Donut Lifts without them falling. A disadvantage of a Mini Mushroom is that its effects cause Mario or Luigi to lose an extra life upon taking a hit, and a Ground Pound is required to defeat or damage enemies.
A Mini Mushroom appears in four levels, the first time being in World 1-4, followed by World 2-Castle, World 3-A, and World 7-A. A Mini Mushroom is also rotated between certain Roulette Blocks.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii[]
Mini Mushrooms retain their role from New Super Mario Bros.. Mini Mushrooms are commonly found in Red Toad Houses. They can only be obtained in three levels themselves, the first being World 2-2, followed by World 4-3 and lastly World 9-8.
New Super Mario Bros. 2[]
Mini Mushrooms retain the same role as in earlier New Super Mario Bros. installments. They commonly appear in Red Toad Houses, just like in New Super Mario Bros. Wii.
New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Luigi U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[]
Mini Mushrooms return as a power-up item. They retain the same functionality, but with the added ability to run up walls, much like what Triangular Blocks allow for in Super Mario World.
In Mario Sports Mix[]
The Mini Mushroom is an item that can be used on opponents to temporarily turn them into their Mini form. Unlike before, the Mini Mushroom is a bad item to be hit with, as a character affected by one cannot hold a basketball, dodgeball, or hockey puck, nor can they do spikes in volleyball. In dodgeball, characters under the effect of a Mini Mushroom cannot perform defensive maneuvers, leaving them highly vulnerable to attack.
In Mario Kart Arcade GP DX[]
Mini Mushrooms are a featured as a type of item. Like Bananas, they can be thrown behind using a crosshair, and if a Mini Mushroom hits an opponent, they shrink.
Crossover appearances[]
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (Nintendo DS)[]
The item only appears in specific parts of the overworld in Polastraits, Icepeak, and Blizland. The Mini Mushroom can only be used by Mario, turning him into his Mini Mario as usual, but this time it is used for skating across ice so that his weight does not break the ice and cause him to fall through. It can also allow Mario to cross narrow surfaces. The effect of the Mini Mushroom can only wear off if Mario grabs a regular Super Mushroom.
In the Dream Event Curling Bowling, there are Mini Mushroom panels found on small platforms on the ice. If the curling stone touches one of these panels, it becomes smaller, making it harder for the curling stone to knock out the Goombas along the way yet easier to sweep.
In other media[]
The Super Mario Bros. Movie[]
Before Princess Peach shrank Bowser, Bowser begged for a second chance. Peach refused and used the Mini Mushroom to shrink Bowser; Toad followed up by putting tiny Bowser in a jar.
Flavor text[]
Trading Card description: Mushroom powers have their ups and downs. Red Super Mushrooms will bulk up your size, allowing you to stomp enemies and smash through pipes and bricks. On the other hand, if you find yourself in a tight spot, blue Mini Mushrooms will shrink you down to fit through tight passageways. Both are very useful!
- North American website: Turn into Mini Mario, and you'll be able to squeeze into tight places, take long floaty jumps, and run along the water. Careful, though—one hit and you're a goner.
- European website: A Mini Mushroom will make you into Mini Mario – awww! As well as being cute as a button mushroom, his stunted stature makes it easy to fit into teeny tiny gaps, jump up high, and even run on water.
