Mimics are a recurring type of enemy in role-playing games. Roughly all of their Mario-related appearances has involved Square Enix as either a developer or collaborator. The first time Mimics appear in a Mario game is Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.

Description[]

Mimics are disguised as wooden treasure chests and attack whoever comes close by. Mimics have had varying depictions, like how the Mimics of Dragon Quest franchise sport a pair of eyes inside of the chest itself and a long, purple tongue. Mimics are consistently depicted with teeth surrounding their rim.

Huhwhat, Whuhoh, Pleaseno, and Comeon are enemies that disguise like mimics. They resemble treasure boxes in the overworld and start a battle when Mario opens them with a jump.

Mario Hoops 3-on-3[]

Mimics are items appearing only in Bloocheep Sea. They chase whoever has the ball while attempting to chomp them. Mimics sometimes spit out several Coins and 10 Coins upon being used.

Mimics as they are depicted in the Dragon Quest franchise appear in the Slurpodrome minigame, where they can take the place of a regular treasure chest. If a Slime encounters a Mimic, it is knocked out of the race. A Mimic also appears on the right side of Castle Trodain.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]

Mimics from the Dragon Quest franchise sometimes appear in the downloadable stage Yggdrasil's Altar. They disguise them themselves as the normal treasure chests found on the floating platforms. When attacked, they reveal themselves and lunge in front of them, inflicting a lot of damage. Afterwards, Mimics wander on the platform, attacking any fighters within range, though they can be defeated if attacked enough, leaving behind an item afterward.
