"Mighty McMario and the Pot of Gold" is the twenty-seventh animated episode of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!. Its corresponding live-action segment is "Heart Throb."

Plot[]

Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool and Toad arrive in the Shamrock Kingdom where King Koopa has stolen their gold coins and put a curse of bad luck on the inhabitants. The Marios agree to help Murphy, the leprechaun who lost his gold but first want lunch. Mouser overhears their conversation and runs off to tell King O'Koopa about it.

Back at Murphy's house the group sits down to a meal of corned beef and cabbage cannelloni. However, when Mario attempts to eat the cannelloni it slips away and he is put through a series of accidents before it finally goes out the window and lands on King O'Koopa. His Koopa Troopas attack but the Marios manage to escape, although get hurt through a few accidents. It starts raining and Murphy claims that it won't ever stop unless he gets his gold back.

Determined to help Murphy and the Shamrock Kingdom, the Marios go to Koopa Castle and sneak into the dungeon where the gold is stored. In order to prevent his bad luck from foiling their plans, Murphy is told to stay behind and guard the secret entrance. Inside, the group sees that the gold is guarded by Beezos and a security alarm. The Beezos leave and Mario comes up with a plan to keep the alarm from going off. It works but Mario drops the coins forcing him to have to stop and pick them up. This delay causes Murphy to believe there is trouble and he runs in to help. Once again Mario drops the coins and this time slips on one tripping the alarm and getting the group captured.

The Princess is kept in King O'Koopa's throne room while her companions are trapped in the dungeon. Mario manages to break a hole in the ceiling prompting the guards to investigate. Mario then uses Murphy’s bad luck to bury them in bricks. Murphy is glad for their escape but must get the gold back soon because the rain is flooding the dam.

King O'Koopa learns of the Marios' escape and decides to hide the gold elsewhere. He leaves Mouser in charge of the Princess and heads off. Luigi and Toad call out to Mouser and get him to chase them while Mario works to free the Princess. After a long chase scene Luigi and Toad are caught by O'Koopa who has also captured Murphy. While Mario does manage to free the Princess, she and he are caught by O'Koopa shortly afterward. Mario attempts to get O'Koopa to give back the coins but he refuses. Murphy once again blames his bad luck for what's happened. This gives Mario the idea to have Murphy make friends with O'Koopa who suddenly starts having bad luck himself. His men flee and he gives back the coins if Murphy will just leave him alone.

With the coins and luck restored the rain stops and Murphy believes he's finally free of the curse. He bumps into Mario who ends up falling through the floor but luckily finds he fell right to lunch.

Trivia/Goofs[]

  • This is one of the rare cases where Koopa's men use metal swords as opposed to wooden ones.
  • The dish that Murphy gives the Marios has red sauce, but when it's used as a weapon against the Koopa Troopas it turns white.
  • At one point the rain inexplicably stops for one scene and in the next scene it starts up again.
  • When Mario breaks the bricked ceiling, the rubble seems to miss the Koopa Troopas. When the camera focuses back on it after Mario claims that "we did it", they are inexplicably gone, presumably below the ceiling.
  • When Mario comes up of the idea for Murphy to act as Koopa's friend, he calls Koopa "Kooper".
  • After the top of the castle crashes down, Koopa is drawn completely green.
  • The plumber's log, 7-11, is the numbers for good luck.
