Micro Goombas (also known as Mini Goombas or Small Goombas) are a semi-recurring enemy in the Mario franchise. They first appear in Super Mario Bros. 3.
Profile[]
Physical description[]
Micro Goombas are a smaller variant of Goombas. Aside from their smaller size, Micro Goombas otherwise have the same physical attributes as regular Goombas, being brown, mushroom-shaped creatures with round feet. In Super Mario Odyssey, Micro Goombas instead have a bright yellow body.
Behavior[]
A Micro Goomba usually cannot damage Mario or another playable character. A Micro Goomba's purpose is usually to slow or otherwise impede the player's character during their journey. Micro Goombas are often dropped by Paragoombas, but they can also be found walking around by themselves.
In Super Mario series[]
Super Mario Bros. 3[]
Micro-Goombas are first encountered in the level World 1-2. A Micro-Goomba's primary aim is to slow either Mario or Luigi or inhibit their progress by distraction. Certain Paragoombas spawn Micro-Goombas while flying, and the Micro-Goombas attempt to land on Mario or Luigi. If either brother touches a Micro-Goomba, it clings to him, throttling the height of their jumps in the process. Micro-Goombas can be shook off from incessant jumping.
Micro-Goombas are alternatively named "Mugger Micro-Goombas", presumably to differentiate from Pile Driver Micro-Goombas.
Super Mario 64/Super Mario 64 DS[]
Micro Goombas are encountered on the small version of Tiny-Huge Island. These Goombas can spot Mario from very far, unlike regular Goombas and Grand Goombas, the latter of which appears in the huge variation of Tiny-Huge Island in place of Micro Goombas. A Micro Goomba cannot damage Mario (as well as Yoshi, Luigi, or Wario in the remake), but instead knock him back a few feet upon contact. Like normal Goombas, a Micro Goomba can be defeated through various means, including stomping, punching, and kicking. Micro Goombas are often found near pits, where they try to knock Mario down into one. Despite their miniature size, a Micro Goomba releases a coin upon being defeated, with the coin being considerably larger than it.
In Super Mario 64 DS, if Yoshi eats a Micro Goomba, which he can easily do using his long tongue, he instantly earns an extra coin without converting the Micro Goomba into an Egg.
Super Princess Peach[]
Micro Goombas are enemies usually encountered when there is a Paragoomba nearby. Similar to their role in Super Mario Bros. 3, a Micro Goomba's aim is to slow Peach/Perry down, preventing them from being able to jump as high. Peach can shake off a Micro Goomba by jumping several times.
New Super Mario Bros.[]
Micro Goombas are enemies only encountered in areas accessed via a small pipe in certain levels, such as World 3-A, World 6-1, World 7-5, World 8-2, and World 8-4. As such, Mario or Luigi can only access these areas while in his Mini form. In some of the areas, Micro Goombas guard the path to a Star Coin.
If Mario or Luigi touch a Micro Goomba while in their Mini form, they lose a life. It is possible for Mini Mario to defeat a Micro Goomba by either stomping it, Ground Pounding it, or touching the Micro Goomba while under the effects of a Starman. In any other form, Mario or Luigi cannot take damage from a Micro Goomba, and he can instantly defeat it upon contact. Micro Goombas are the only enemy that Mini Mario or Mini Luigi can defeat using a stomp attack.
Super Mario Galaxy[]
Micro Goombas return as enemies, now having a round body and a larger appearance, making them resemble Goombos from Super Mario Land. Micro Goombas are uncommon enemies, and like in New Super Mario Bros., they are often found in secret areas of certain levels. Micro Goombas act differently from Goombas, as spinning and instantly defeating a Micro Goomba only yields a Coin instead of three Star Bits. Micro Goombas no longer attach to the player, and more or less act like normal Goombas.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii[]
Micro Goombas return as enemies, and they can now be found in the overworld, not just secret areas like in New Super Mario Bros.. Micro Goombas are encountered in World 5-4 and World 7-5, usually in groups while still not being dropped by Paragoombas. Micro Goombas also retain their behavior from Super Mario Bros. 3 in which they weigh Mario, Luigi, Yellow Toad, or Blue Toad down by swarming on him, affecting his jumping ability. They cannot hurt the player's character unless they are in their Mini form, causing them to lose a life. A Spin Jump can now be performed to shake off the Micro Goombas.
Despite their size, Micro Goombas still let out a coin upon defeat, like in Super Mario 64. They can be defeated from one of Fire Mario's fireballs. A Micro Goomba can be frozen from an Ice Ball thrown by Ice Mario. Because of their size, a Micro Goomba is contained in a much smaller ice cube, but it can still slide along the path to defeat enemies along the way and become defeated upon hitting a wall.
In beta builds of New Super Mario Bros. Wii, it was shown that Micro Goombas were going to function identically to how they did in New Super Mario Bros. with any form being able to defeat them.
Super Mario Galaxy 2[]
Micro Goombas return as enemies, having the same appearance and behavior as in Super Mario Galaxy. Micro-Goombas are more common than in the previous game. Defeating one with a Star Spin leaves behind a Star Bit instead of one coin like in Super Mario Galaxy, although stomping a Micro Goomba still causes it to drop behind a coin. Magikoopas have the ability to spawn Micro Goombas from their wand.
New Super Mario Bros. 2[]
Micro Goombas retain the same behavior as in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. They first appear World 4-1, where if the Gold Ring is activated, the Micro Goombas become Gold Micro Goombas for the duration of its effects. Micro Goombas also appear in World 5-3, but only if Mario or Luigi the Gold Ring, go fast to the Cannon Pipe, or use the Super Leaf to fly up to the Micro Goomba's platform when reaching the edge of the first cliff after getting the second one.
Just as before, a Micro Goomba can be defeated by a stomp attack, like regular Goombas, or detached from Mario or Luigi if he performs a Ground Pound. Micro Goombas can also automatically drop from Mario or Luigi after he moves around for a few seconds. Micro Goombas are still not dropped by any Paragoombas. While in their Raccoon form, Mario or Luigi can additionally defeat a Micro Goomba by swiping his tail at it.
New Super Mario Bros. U/New Super Luigi U/New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[]
In all three games, Micro Goombas can mainly be found in large groups in Magma-River Cruise. Kamek can occasionally turn a platform into a Micro Goomba during his boss battle in Slide Lift Tower.
Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[]
Micro Goombas return as enemies, and take on their appearance from the New Super Mario Bros. subseries, but were made slightly larger. Micro Goombas are first encountered in Koopa Troopa Cave. Like regular Goombas, they chase Mario or another playable character upon being approached, although it is now possible for them to damage the player's character upon contact. They generally appear in groups, and sometimes hide inside crates and other breakable objects.
Either performing a Ground Pound or blowing into the Wii U GamePad's mic pushes away a Micro Goomba, but does not defeat it. They can be defeated using the same methods as for regular Goombas, or by tapping them on the Wii U GamePad.
Super Mario Maker/Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS/Super Mario Maker 2[]
In all three games, while editing a level, if the player shakes a Goomba, it splits into two to five Micro Goombas, but they all fall offscreen as if the Goomba had been erased. This can similarly be done with a Galoomba. Micro Goombas cannot be added to a level.
Super Mario Odyssey[]
Micro Goombas are enemies first encountered in Cap Kingdom, then later on in the Sand Kingdom, Lake Kingdom, Metro Kingdom and lastly the Mushroom Kingdom. Micro Goombas behave similarly as in Super Mario 3D World. Unlike normal Goombas, Micro Goombas cannot be captured. Micro Goombas are often located inside of crates.
In Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars[]
Although Micro Goombas do not appear, a similar species named Goombette does.
In Mario & Luigi series[]
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga[]
Micro Goombas briefly appear to make up the clones of Trunkle, Lemmy, and Wendy during their battles. In the remake, the Micro Goombas have been removed, and the clones instead poof away upon defeat.
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time[]
Micro Goombas make a brief appearance during the battle against Mrs. Thwomp, in which they make up the miniature clones.
In Paper Mario series[]
Super Paper Mario[]
Micro Goombas are only mentioned by a resident in The Underwhere where he says that he died because of a Micro Goomba and a bottomless pit. This may be a reference to Super Mario 64. A Sammer Guy named "Micro Boomba" is a pun on Micro Goomba.
Paper Mario: Color Splash[]
This is their first physical appearance in the Paper Mario series. They are now referred to as Small Goombas because they are actually regular-sized Goombas enchanted by Kamek, and appear in the Sacred Forest. Several Small Goomba Gangs scatter the blue Mini Paint Star of that level into five pieces.
Five Small Goombas can band up to form Small Goomba Wheels. Small Goomba Gangs are more dangerous, and can pummel Mario down a large chunk of his health if they remain together. During battle, the Small Goomba Gangs become increasingly smaller as Mario hits and scatters them, making them significantly more manageable.
In other media[]
Nintendo Adventure Books[]
As Mario explores the Mushroom Kingdom in Double Trouble, he can encounter a swarm of Paragoombas, which begin dropping Micro Goombas on him. If Mario decides to pick the Micro Goombas off instead of running for cover, the tiny Goombas will knock him out with some noxious gas, though their parents will leave him alone after finding him unappetizing. If Mario makes a run for some pipes instead, he will pick the Micro Goombas off, and be left alone when the Paragoombas grow bored of waiting for him to come out.

Trivia[]
- Its Psychopath thought is a reference to the United States of America's twenty-sixth president, Theodore Roosevelt, whose motto was "Speak softly and carry a big stick. You will go far."
- Chuck Quizmo's first quiz in the game Paper Mario features "Goombette" (a varitey from Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars) as an incorrect name for Goombario's little sister, Goombaria.
- Various issues of Nintendo Power have nicknamed Micro Goombas Bean Goombas, Pea Goombas, and even Sausage Goombas mostly due to their tiny size.
