Description[]
Mertropolis is an underwater city protected by an oxygen-containing dome. Though never stated outright, it is implied to be somewhere within Water Land. Mertropolis is inhabited by fish-like merfolk who each wear a water-filled fishbowl, due to Mertropolis being filled with oxygen. Metropolis is ruled over by King Mackerel and his daughter, Holly Mackerel.

In "The Ugly Mermaid" King Koopa plans to take over Mertropolis using his Doom Sub and rename it "Kooptropolis", but his plans were foiled by the Mario Bros. when they used a group of Jelectros against his submarine.

Mertropolis's name is a portmanteau of the words "merfolk" and "metropolis," owing to how Mertropolis is a large city inhabited by fish-like merfolk.
