Memory Match is a minigame which first appears in Super Mario 64 DS, as one of Luigi's minigames, and returns in New Super Mario Bros., instead being categorized as a Table minigame.

In Super Mario 64 DS, there is a harder variation named Memory Master, which was integrated into Memory Match in New Super Mario Bros., which additionally adds a multiplayer variation of the minigame.

Gameplay[]

Memory Match is essentially a Mario-themed variation of Concentration (similarly to Super Mario Bros. 3's Matching Game), except it also involves betting coins. At the start, Luigi bets three coins to the player and serves a group of eight cards upside-down. The object for the player is to match all card pairs. The possible card pairs range from a Mushroom, Fire Flower, Star, and a Cloud. In some of the later rounds, the card pairings that are added include Mario, Luigi, Bowser, a Goomba, Yoshi and a Boo when more total cards are added to the table.

In Super Mario 64 DS, whenever the player completes a challenge, they receive twice the number of coins bet, while in New Super Mario Bros., they will receive thrice the number of coins bet. In both versions, they will receive a Star as a point. If the player taps two cards that are not matching, a coin is given to Luigi from the bet number. In the later rounds with more cards added in the New Super Mario Bros. version of the minigame, any of the four cards (or eight with sixteen total cards) will be flipped over for 2-3 second before the round starts, to make it a little easier for the player, as long as they memorize their locations in order to correctly pair it with a card of the same symbol. If Luigi takes all of these coins, the player loses a Star, and if the player loses all of their coins to bet, it is a Game Over.

The multiplayer variation features twenty cards. In this version, the minigame randomly selects which player has their turn first. The players go in order. If a player taps two matching cards, they earn two points and can have more turns until they incorrectly match the card pairs. Once all of the cards are gone, the minigame ends, and whoever ends with the most points is the winner.
