Mega Mushrooms are a type of mushroom that causes its user to grow to an incredible size and grants invulnerability. In most appearances, Mega Mushrooms have big yellow caps with red spots, and while all other mushrooms slide along the ground, the Mega Mushroom hops. The Mega Mushroom makes its first appearance in Mario Party 4.

In Mario Party series[]

Mega Mushroom Mario Party 4

A Mega Mushroom from Mario Party 4.

In Mario Party 4, the Mega Mushroom is an item that makes the player giant. While larger, the player is allowed to roll two Dice Blocks, for a total of 2-20 spaces (similar to the Mushroom from Mario Party 2 and 3). If they roll the same numbers, they get a bonus 10 coins (or a bonus 30 for two "7's"). The player (while giant) gets to steal ten coins from other players they pass. They bypass Star Spaces, Item Shops, and all board events while giant. However, the exception is Bowser at Bowser's Gnarly Party. If the player passes him while using this item, they are challenged to do a Bowser Mega minigame, which can be either Bowser Wrestling or Panels of Doom.

This item replaces the Mushroom (from the previous two installments --Mario Party 2 and 3) and is succeeded by the Mushroom Capsule/Mushroom Orb, Twice Candy, and Double Dice (in Mario Party 5 through Superstars).

A prop resembles Mega Mushroom in Clock Watchers in Mario Party 7.

The Mega Mushroom appears in Mario Party: Star Rush in Bowser's Space Race. The player has a chance to use it to deal more damage with the bomb resulting three points.

In Mario Party: The Top 100, Mega Mushrooms were used in Mush Pit. It takes a short time to grow when using it unlike Mario Party 3.

In Super Mario series[]

New Super Mario Bros.[]

Mega Mushroom Artwork - New Super Mario Bros

Artwork for New Super Mario Bros.

Mega Mushrooms cause Mario or Luigi to grow to the size of the entire screen for a limited amount of time, destroying anything in their path including Warp Pipes, enemies, blocks, and even the end-level flagpoles. It also allows the player to kill a boss by walking into it. Touching a Mega Mushroom also earns the player 1,000 points.

While Mario or Luigi are under the effects of a Mega Mushroom, a Mega Meter consisting of several segments is featured at the top of the screen, and gradually fills light green as various objects are destroyed along the way. When Mario or Luigi return to normal, 1-Up Mushrooms are awarded depending on how much of the Mega Meter has been filled. If it has been entirely filled, five 1-Up Mushrooms drop from the sky.

In the E3 2005 prototype, the Mega Mushroom has the same color scheme of the original Super Mushroom from Super Mario Bros..

New Super Mario Bros. 2[]

Mega Mushrooms make a reappearance here, although are slightly less common than in New Super Mario Bros..

Super Mario 3D World[]

Mega Mushrooms are also present in Super Mario 3D World but they are a lot less common and can be found on a few levels. Usually, whenever Mega Mushrooms are seen, they are needed to get to a Green Star nearby.

In Mario Kart series[]

Mario Kart Wii[]

A Mega Mushroom is one of the items received from an Item Box, generally from characters in 4th through 7th places. Once obtained from an Item Box, the character grows to a huge size for a short period of time, increasing the speed of their kart. If there are any unfortunate drivers in the way, the racer with the Mega Mushroom item can run them over and squish them, which in turn reduces their speed (and also their size). The same theme from New Super Mario Bros. plays while under the effect of a Mega Mushroom.

In Mario & Luigi series[]

In Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, Broque Monsieur uses a Mega Mushroom during the Vacuum command tutorial. Bowser must punch Broque Monsieur to avoid being rammed into.

In Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, the Mega Mushroom was used for the Mega Thwonk. Luigi uses the Mega Mushroom to become a giant.

Crossover appearance[]

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (Wii)[]

Mega Mushrooms also appear in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games for the Wii. They only appear in only three events: Dream Snowball Fight, Dream Ice Hockey, and Dream Curling. In Dream Curling, they make the player's character and the puck bigger. In Dream Ice Hockey, the Mega Mushroom temporarily increases the size of a character. In Dream Snowball Fight, they make the player's character and their snowballs bigger for a short amount of time. If someone gets hit by a big snowball, they pass out for a couple of seconds.
