Mega Bob-ombs are a larger more powerful variety of the Bob-omb appearing in several games. Mega Bob-ombs typically behave similarly to regular sized Bob-ombs with their only prominent difference being their size. Additionally, due to their larger size, their explosions are also heaps larger capable of causing heaps more destruction than a regular Bob-omb. Due to their size, Mega Bob-ombs can come in mobile forms or rolling forms and can typically be defeated in the same ways as a regular Bob-omb. Mega Bob-ombs have also made several prominent appearances in the Mario Sports series.
History[]
Super Mario Strikers[]
Mega Bob-ombs appear in Super Mario Strikers. In this game, they appear as items that can be obtained by the players, Mega Bob-ombs function similarly to the standard Bob-ombs with the primary exception being that upon usage, only one Mega Bob-omb rains down (unlike the regular Bob-ombs where multiple rain down). A Mega Bob-omb's explosion radius is larger than that of a normal Bob-omb making it more useful in slipping up any rivals however, the Mega Bob-omb can also affect a player's teammates as well so be careful not to slip up any teammates by accident. When Wario loses, he also pulls out a Mega Bob-omb which proceeds to explode on him.
Mario Strikers Charged[]
Mega Bob-ombs return in Mario Strikers Charged with the same overall functions and roles as in Super Mario Strikers. In this game, they are once again obtainable items and just as before, unlike the normal-sized Bob-ombs where multiple can rain down, only one Mega Bob-omb rains down and it's explosion radius is much bigger and can knock over any players within the radius, just as before, the Mega Bob-ombs can knock over teammates so proceed with caution when placing it.
Mario Sports Mix[]
Mega Bob-ombs appear again in Mario Sports Mix. In this game, they can be seen in the minigame Bob-omb Dodge. During the minigame, Mega Bob-ombs are shot out of the cannons around the sides of the arena alongside dozens of normal-sized Bob-ombs however the Mega Bob-ombs are far more dangerous than the normal-sized Bob-ombs and can cause players to take up to 25 points of damage.
Mario & Luigi: Dream Team[]
Mega Bob-ombs appear again in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. In this game, they can be seen during the battle with The Elite Trio. One of their attacks involves the trio chasing Mario with a Mega Bob-omb, Mario runs whilst avoiding the Goombas charging at him from behind, if Mario is hit, by the Mega Bob-omb, he will take heavy damage however if he dodges the charging Goombas for long enough, the Mega Bob-omb will explode doing heavy damage to the pursuing Elite Trio. Mega Bob-ombs are later seen in Neo Bowser Castle as a hazard that Mario and Luigi must avoid while progressing through the castle, the Mega Bob-ombs can be seen rolling along the tracks the plumbers are walking across. Typically, they must seek shelter in the various alcoves off the tracks whilst the Mega Bob-ombs pass. If the plumbers are hit by a Mega Bob-omb, it will explode sending them flying back to their starting location, when appearing in large numbers, the Mega Bob-ombs can be annoying to avoid as they are usually in narrow areas so the plumbers must time their movements to get by unscathed. Mega Bob-ombs are also involved in various puzzles throughout the castle where the plumbers must change the strength of the wind ducts to make the Mega Bob-ombs roll down the correct tracks to use them to open the path forward. After Antasma's defeat, Mega Bob-ombs are also seen being rolled down by the Elite Trio as a final attempt to stop Mario and Luigi from reaching the Castle's Tower where Bowser is, later, when the plumbers are escaping Neo Bowser Castle, several Mega Bob-ombs can be seen bouncing along the tracks which they must avoid.
The Mega Bob-ombs in Neo Bowser Castle have textured-on feet and their 3D appearance also sticks out more.
Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam[]
Mega Bob-ombs are seen again in Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam. In this game, they can be seen in the minigame Safe by a Sandslide as obstacles that must be avoided as Mario, Luigi, and Paper Mario are rescuing the Paper Toads sliding down the sandslide, if they are hit by a Mega Bob-omb, they lose a life-point. If they lose all three, they lose the game. Mega Bob-ombs are also seen in the minigame Bombs Away as obstacles used by Bowser and his Koopalings which must be tossed back. Mega Bob-ombs are also smaller in this game than in the previous game.
Super Mario Maker / Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS / Super Mario Maker 2[]
Mega Bob-ombs appear in Super Mario Maker as well as it's two sequels. In these games, they can be made by giving a Super Mushroom to a Bob-omb. Mega Bob-ombs behave identically to standard Bob-ombs with the major difference being their size. Just like a regular Bob-omb, Mega Bob-ombs can be ignited with stomps or the effects of a Fire Flower which can be used to destroy blocks and enemies. Their explosions are also larger making them capable of destroying more objects around them. Mega Bob-ombs can also be given wings to become Winged Mega Bob-ombs and can also be destroyed with the effects of a Starman.
Paper Mario: Color Splash[]
Mega Bob-ombs also appear in Paper Mario: Color Splash. In this game, they are seen all around Black Bowser's Castle as possible weapons and ammo. Many are seen around the Black Paint Cauldron sleeping. Mario must lure a normal-sized Bob-omb to the sleeping Mega Bob-ombs. Upon being ignited, the Mega Bob-ombs will create a large chain reaction exploding the entire room flooding it with Black Paint which slowly starts to consume the room as Mario and Huey make their escape.
Mario Tennis Aces[]
Mega Bob-ombs appear in Mario Tennis Aces as weapons used by the Black Shy Guy boss during the final phase of the minigame Shy Guy's Train Tussle. When the Black Shy Guy's health is fully depleted, he will make one last ditch attempt at the players by tossing a Mega Bob-omb at them which they all must deflect back at him to win the battle, after one player deflects the Mega Bob-omb, the Black Shy Guy will deflect it to another player who must also deflect it, once all four players have deflected the Mega Bob-omb, the battle is won.
Other Appearances[]
The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3[]
Despite not appearing in the game Super Mario Bros. 3, a Mega Bob-omb appears in The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 episode Crimes R Us. In the episode, after the Koopalings attempt to rob the bank (the Mushroom Kingdom Treasury), they are blindsided by Mario, Luigi, and Crime Wave Clyde (who has betrayed Bowser and the Koopalings), when King Koopa pulls up the moneybags and opens them, he instead sees the tied up Koopalings in one bag and a Mega Bob-omb in the other. The Mega Bob-omb proceeds to explode into fireworks as the Airship King Koopa is piloting retreats.
