"So this is the end: being slowly digested by an eel next to an... idiot in overalls."
Donkey Kong

Maw-Rays are a relative of Unagi that appears in Super Mario Odyssey. They look similar to their relatives but differ in several ways, first, their method of attacking is very similar to a Gringill or a Spike Eel. Also, unlike Unagis, they never leave their holes. Maw-Rays also have more jagged scales and their bodies aren't striped.

In Super Mario Odyssey[]

Maw-Rays appear in several underwater kingdoms in Super Mario Odyssey, including the Lake Kingdom and the Seaside Kingdom. They are also found within the Mushroom Kingdom, where they pop out from the clouds, revealing that they can survive outside of water.

In The Super Mario Bros. Movie[]

A single Maw-Ray also makes an appearance in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, here, it is seen residing in the ocean on the outskirts of the Mushroom Kingdom swallowing Cheep Cheeps and Bloopers. Mario and Donkey Kong eventually find themselves swallowed by the Maw-Ray after falling from the Rainbow Road, the duo manages to escape after repairing DK's Rocket Barrel which the Maw-Ray also swallowed. The Maw-Ray spat out Mario and Donkey Kong as they escape it.
