This article is about the New Super Mario Bros. multiplayer mode. You may be looking for the Mario vs. Luigi Tour in 2020, 2022, or 2023 in Mario Kart Tour.

Mario vs. Luigi is a two-player mode in New Super Mario Bros.. The object is for Mario and Luigi to try and collect the most Big Stars by the end of a stage.

Setup[]

Two players need to have a Nintendo DS/3DS/2DS console each. When selecting the mode, the player has two options to choose from, competing against another player that does/does not own a copy of the game. After selecting an option, the player can choose to play as either Mario or Luigi, and once a brother has been choosen, the game will search for another player that will play as the other bro, and then both players wait for their games to connect.

In a similar vein to the VS and Battle modes of Mario Kart DS, the host can choose how many wins each player needs from 1-3 to end the game, how many lives for each Bro (3, 5, or infinite lives), how many Big Stars to collect (3, 5, or 10), and whether to either choose a course each time or randomize the course selection. Then, the host can choose from five stages, Grass, Bricks, Ice, Pipes, and Fortress.

Gameplay[]

As mentioned above, both brothers compete against each other to collect the most Big Stars, dependent on the maximum total set. Big Stars will spawn on the stage, and their locations will be marked on the map via the Touch Screen. The brothers can have Big Stars knocked out of each other by hitting each other, such as Ground Pounding or Fireballs, running into enemies or falling off the stage. All the stages are wrapped, so the brothers can loop from the end of the stage to the beginning, and vice versa.

When a brother collects eight out of eight coins, he is rewarded with a power up (Super Mushroom, Fire Flower, Blue Shell, Mini Mushroom, Starman, or a Mega Mushroom). However, the brothers can find other power-ups in some ? Blocks in the stages.

When a brother is one Big Star away from winning, or if the lives are turned on and a brother is on their last life, the music starts getting faster. Victory is rewarded to the player that reaches the maximum total of Big Stars or the brother that survives the longest (if the lives are turned on).

Stages[]

Stage Name Description
NSMB-MarioVsLuigi-Grass
Grass A grassy meadow that is themed after World 1 in the game, but it is heavily structured after World 1-1 from Super Mario Bros, containing two Goombas and a single green Koopa Troopa.
NSMB-MarioVsLuigi-Bricks
Bricks An underground segment that is mostly made of blue Brick Blocks, with some Lifts, and contains a Goomba and a red Koopa Troopa. If a brother gets a Mega Mushroom, they can easily break through the floor beneath them without caution.
NSMB-MarioVsLuigi-Ice
Ice A snow/ice stage based of World 5, using the same background from the overworld and a few levels like World 5-A, World 5-B and World 5-4. This level contains Bill Blasters and Bullet Bills, a red Koopa Troopa, and the game's only appearance of blue Koopa Troopas, which can provide the brothers with a Blue Shell when jumped on or Ground Pounded.
NSMB-MarioVsLuigi-Pipe
Pipe A pipe maze that is based of World 7-A. This level contains a few Piranha Plants coming out of pipes. The brothers cannot enter any of the green pipes, but there is a red Warp Pipe that takes a brother to higher ground, and a yellow Warp Pipe that takes the brothers from beginning to end, and vice versa.
NSMB-MarioVsLuigi-Fortress
Fortress This stage is based off many of the Castle levels in the game. It features a moving roof that can crush the brothers if they are on higher ground. The stage also contains a few Bob-ombs.
